The topic of this article is "GMOs: good or bad?". Let's try to understand this issue without prejudice. After all, it is precisely the lack of objectivity that sins today in many materials devoted to this controversial topic. Today, in many countries of the world (including Russia), the concept of GMOs has begun to be used when they talk about "products that cause tumors and mutations." From all sides, GMOs are being poured with mud for various reasons: tasteless, unsafe, threaten the food independence of our country. But is it really so scary and what is it really? Let's answer these questions.

Deciphering the concept

GMOs are genetically modified organisms, that is, modified using genetic engineering methods. This concept in a narrow sense extends to plants. In the past, various breeders, such as Michurin, have sought useful properties in plants using various tricks. These included, in particular, the grafting of cuttings of some trees onto others, or the choice for sowing seeds only with certain qualities. After that, it was necessary to wait a long time for the results, which only after a couple of generations steadfastly manifested themselves. Today, the right gene can be transferred to the right place and thus quickly get what you want. That is, GMOs are the direction of evolution in the right direction, its acceleration.

The original purpose of breeding GMOs

Several techniques can be used to create a GMO plant. The most popular today is the transgene method. The necessary gene (for example, the drought resistance gene) is isolated in pure form from the DNA strand. After that, it is introduced into the DNA of the plant to be modified.

Genes can be taken from related species. In this case, the process is called cisgenesis. Transgenesis occurs when a gene is taken from distant species.

It is about the latter that terrible stories go. Many, having learned that wheat today exists with the scorpion gene, begin to fantasize about whether those who eat it will grow claws and a tail. Numerous illiterate publications on forums and websites Today, the topic of GMOs, the benefits or harms of which are being discussed very actively, has not lost its relevance. However, this is not the only way that "specialists" who are not familiar with biochemistry and biology scare potential consumers of products containing GMOs.

Today, such products have agreed to be called everything that is genetically modified organisms or any products that contain components of these organisms. That is, GMO food will be not only genetically modified potatoes or corn, but also sausages, in which besides liver and GMO soy are added. But products made from cow meat that were fed wheat containing GMOs would not be considered such a product.

The effect of GMOs on the human body

Journalists who do not understand such topics as genetic engineering and biotechnology, but who understand the relevance and relevance of the GMO problem, launched a duck that, getting into our intestines and stomach, the cells of the products containing them are absorbed into the bloodstream and then spread through tissues and organs that cause cancerous tumors and mutations.

It should be noted that this fantastic plot is far from reality. Any food, without GMOs or with them, in the intestines and stomach breaks down under the action of intestinal enzymes, pancreatic and gastric juice secretions into components, and they are not genes at all and not even proteins. These are amino acids, triglycerides, simple sugars and fatty acids. All this in different parts of the gastrointestinal tract is then absorbed into the bloodstream, after which it is spent for various purposes: to obtain energy (sugar), as a building material (amino acids), for energy reserves (fats).

For example, if you take a genetically modified organism (say, an ugly apple that has become like a cucumber), then it will be quietly chewed and decomposed into its component parts in the same way as any other non-GMO.

Other GMO horror stories

Another story, no less chilling, concerns the fact that transgenes are built into it, which leads to terrible consequences like infertility and cancer. For the first time in 2012, the French wrote about cancer in mice that were given genetically modified grain. In fact, Gilles-Eric Séralini, the director of the experiment, made a sample of 200 Sprague-Dawley rats. Of these, a third were fed GM corn grains, another third were fed herbicide-treated GM corn, and the last third were fed regular grains. As a result, female rats that ate genetically modified organisms (GMOs) gave tumor growth of 80% within two years. Males, on the other hand, developed kidney and liver pathologies on such a diet. Characteristically, a third of the animals on a normal diet also died from various tumors. This line of rats is generally prone to the sudden appearance of tumors, not associated with the nature of nutrition. Therefore, the purity of the experiment can be considered doubtful, and it was recognized as untenable and unscientific.

Similar surveys were carried out earlier, in 2005, in our country. GMOs in Russia were studied by the biologist Ermakova. She presented a report at a conference in Germany on the high mortality of mice fed GMO soybeans. The statement, confirmed in a scientific experiment, then began to spread around the world, bringing young mothers to hysteria. After all, they had to feed their babies with artificial mixtures. And they used GMO soybeans. The five experts of Nature Biotechnology further agreed that the results of the Russian experiment were ambiguous, and their validity was not recognized.

I would like to add that even if a piece of foreign DNA ends up in the human bloodstream, this genetic information will not be integrated into the body in any way and will not lead to anything. Of course, in nature there are cases of integrating pieces of the genome into a foreign organism. In particular, some bacteria thus spoil the genetics of flies. However, such phenomena have not been described in higher animals. In addition, there is more than enough genetic information in non-GMO products. And if they have not been integrated into the human genetic material so far, then you can continue to calmly eat everything that the body absorbs, including those containing GMOs.

Benefit or harm?

Monsanto, an American company, already in 1982 brought to the market genetically modified products: soybeans and cotton. She also owns the authorship of the Roundup herbicide, which kills all vegetation, with the exception of genetically modified ones.

In 1996, when Monsanto's products were launched on the market, competing corporations launched a massive revenue rescue campaign to curb the circulation of GMO products. Arpad Pusztai, a British scientist, was the first to be noted in the persecution. He fed GMO potatoes to rats. True, later the experts smashed all the calculations of this scientist to smithereens.

Potential harm for Russians from GMO products

Nobody hides the fact that on the lands sown with GMO-grain lands, nothing else grows except for themselves. This is due to the fact that varieties of cotton or soybeans that are resistant to herbicides do not stain with them. they can be sprayed, achieving the extinction of all other vegetation.

Glyphosphate is the most commonly used herbicide. It is actually sprayed even before the maturation of plants and quickly decomposes in them, not remaining in the soil. However, resistant GMO plants allow it to be used in huge quantities, which increases the risk of glyphosphate accumulation in GMO plants. This herbicide is also known to cause overgrowth bone tissue and obesity. And in Latin America and the United States, there are a bit too many people who are overweight.

Many GMO seeds are designed for just one sowing. That is, what will grow out of them will not give offspring. Most likely, this is a commercial ploy, since in this way the sale of GMO seeds increases. Modified plants that produce next generations exist just fine.

Since artificial gene mutations (for example, in soybeans or potatoes) can increase the allergenic properties of products, it is often said that GMOs are powerful allergens. But devoid of the usual proteins, some varieties of peanuts do not cause allergies even in those who suffered from it before for this particular product.

Due to their characteristics, they can reduce the number of other varieties of their species. If conventional wheat and GMO wheat are planted in two adjacent plots, there is a risk that the modified one will replace the common one, pollinating it. However, hardly anyone would let them grow side by side.

By abandoning its own seed funds and using only GMO seeds, especially disposable ones, the state will eventually become food dependent on the firms that hold the seed fund.

Conferences with the participation of Rospotrebnadzor

After horror stories and tales about GMO products were repeatedly replicated in all the media, Rospotrebnadzor took part in many conferences on this issue. At a conference in Italy, held in March 2014, his delegation participated in technical consultations on the low content of genetically modified organisms in Russia's trade turnover. Today, therefore, a course has been adopted for the almost complete exclusion of such products from the food market of our country. The use of GMO plants in agriculture was also delayed, although the use of GMO seeds was planned to begin as early as 2013 (government decree of September 23, 2013).

Barcode

The Ministry of Education and Science went even further. It has proposed the use of a barcode to replace the Non-GMO label in Russia. It should contain all information about the genetic modification contained in the product or about its absence. A good undertaking, but without a special device it will be impossible to read this barcode.

Genetically modified foods and the law

GMOs are regulated by law in some states. In Europe, for example, their content in products is not allowed more than 0.9%, in Japan - 9%, in the USA - 10%. In our country, products in which the GMO content exceeds 0.9% are subject to mandatory labeling. Businesses violating these laws face sanctions, up to and including termination of operations.

Conclusion

The conclusion from all this can be drawn as follows: the problem of GMOs (benefit or harm from the use of products containing them) is clearly inflated today. The real consequences of the long-term use of such products are unknown. To date, no authoritative scientific experiments have been conducted on this issue.

When choosing products in the supermarket, we habitually pay attention to the composition. On many of them you can see the mark "GMO-free", indicating that genetically modified engineering did not have a hand in growing this product, and therefore it can be considered clean and safe. But if you think about it, what do we know about genetic engineering and should we be afraid to include GMO foods in our diet? Let's figure it out.

What is GMO

First of all, let's deal with the concept of GMOs. A genetically modified organism is an organism whose gene has been changed by crossing with the gene of another organism. For modern scientists, such crossing does not present any problems; they easily connect the gene of a plant, with the gene of a bacterium or even an animal.

Why is this necessary you ask? In fact, geneticists have made a revolutionary discovery, having learned to overcome interspecies barriers and connect the genes of different organisms. Thanks to this, it is possible to improve the properties and characteristics of a particular organism. It looks like this. A GMO potato is a potato that has been implanted with a gene for a poisonous insect, as a result of which pests bypass this product. As a result, we get beautiful tubers without damage and wormholes. Or GMO tomatoes are tomatoes from which the northern flounder gene is implanted. As a result of such crossing, tomatoes are not afraid of cold weather and do not turn black after heavy fogs. Vitamins that were not previously contained in wheat are now being implanted into wheat, and the human albumin gene is being implanted into rice. This is done to increase the benefits and improve the nutritional properties of cereals.

Among other things, it turned out that genetic engineering had a significant impact on crop yields, because with the implantation of foreign genes, products became more hardy and resistant to temperatures. All this significantly reduced the cost of the process of obtaining a crop and increased the profits of farms. Is it any wonder that farmers are happy to grow genetically modified foods? And it is much more pleasant for consumers to buy juicy bulk apples, peppers or tomatoes that look great, have an unsurpassed taste, and at the same time have absolutely no damage. There is only one fact that is alarming, which cannot be ignored.

Why are GMO foods dangerous?

Mankind is wary of genetically modified foods, primarily because such foods contain a foreign gene. There is an objective fear that modified foods are harmful to humans, just so far their harm is not so obvious, but in the future, perhaps even after several generations, GMO foods will deal their crushing blow to our descendants. In addition, there are suspicions that genetically modified foods can cause allergies, cause the growth of malignant tumors, disrupt metabolic processes in the body and resistance to antibiotics.

Adding fuel to the fire are statistics that in the United States, where the vast majority of products contain GMOs, more than 75% of the population suffer from allergies. At the same time, in Sweden, where a ban on the use of these products has been introduced, the number of allergy sufferers does not exceed 5%. It is quite possible that the presence of an allergy has nothing to do with genetic engineering, but such data is very alarming and makes one look at all products of this kind with caution.

At the same time, genetic scientists assure us that there is no threat from eating foods with GMOs, since in the process of digestion their gene cannot cross with the human gene. True, the evidence cited by scientists does not at all exclude the risk of gastrointestinal diseases, allergic pathologies or cancerous tumors caused by the activity of transgenes in the human body.

The opinion that GMO foods are no more dangerous than foods with preservatives and flavors may have the right to life, but this does not mean that such harm should be turned a blind eye. Be that as it may, modern science has no evidence of the safety of genetically modified products, and therefore the term "potentially dangerous product" is used in relation to them.

Why were GMO foods created?

Many people have a question, why were products created, the effect on the body of which cannot be controlled? Here it is necessary to look into history. It turns out that the first transgenic products were born in the United States back in the mid-80s of the last century, and they were created with a good goal - to finally save humanity from hunger and feed third world countries. But in reality it turned out the opposite. Almost all African countries have abandoned the use of GMO products, in European countries they have imposed restrictions, but in the USA these products are produced everywhere and are very popular. And what do we have in Russia?

GMO products in Russia

The number of genetically modified foods in countries is monitored by the well-known organization Greenpeace. According to them, more than 35% of products in our country contain the modified gene. And every year the number of such products is increasing. Why is this happening?

Let's say right away that the import of transgenic products into the Russian Federation is not prohibited, and therefore, on the shelves of our stores, natural products coexist with products that have been touched by the hand of genetic engineers. Moreover, if in European countries genetically modified products are easy to distinguish from natural ones due to their lower price, in Russia, natural vegetables and vegetables with a gene mutation cost about the same.

Many are unlikely to be pleased with the fact that since July 2014 in Russian Federation cultivation allowed cultivated plants GMO method. Moreover, permission was given to grow 14 species of plants, including: corn - 8 varieties, potatoes - 4 varieties, sugar beet - 1 variety and rice - 1 variety.

Our scientists have already reacted to this permission, stating that the cultivation of modified cultivated plants will lead, no less, to the complete destruction of agriculture in the country! According to experts, the cultivation of GMOs in our country will lead to the emergence of super pests that are already appearing in other countries. But even more dangerous, the crops of farmers who grow ecologically clean production, will be contaminated, as under the influence of transgenes, soil contamination occurs. And there is no need to look for evidence. Just look at the soils of those countries where modified vegetables and fruits have been grown for a long time. For example, all rapeseed in Canada today has become genetically modified, and all due to the fact that the pollen of cereals with a modified gene was carried to the surrounding fields.

Many are reassured by the fact that in the US, GMO products are sold without restrictions and are not considered potentially dangerous. However, for those of us who adhere to healthy eating, you should be aware of products that may contain a modified gene.

Foods that may contain GMOs

1. All products containing soy, corn and rapeseed
According to unofficial sources, all these products found on the shelves of supermarkets contain GMOs. When you see the words “vegetable protein” on a product label, you can be sure that this is 100% transgenic soy. By the way, this protein is found in most meat and sausage products, in mayonnaise and ketchup, chips and canned food, as well as in soy dairy products.

2. Margarine and vegetable oil
According to statistics, 90% of all vegetable oils in our stores contain GMOs. Moreover, some manufacturers dilute olive oil with soy at all, and do not even report it on the labels.

3. Candy, chocolate and ice cream
Almost all chocolate products contain genetically modified ingredients. You can notice this by the composition in which soy lecithin is present. Similar soy components are found in ice cream, as, indeed, in all other dairy products.

4. Baby food
The vast majority of foreign and domestic manufacturers use for the production baby food dairy products and cereals with GMOs.

5. Confectionery and bakery products
Flour, as well as bakery and confectionery may also contain altered genes. According to statistics in our country, more than 25% of all flour products contain these potentially hazardous substances.

6. Vegetables
Some vegetables also undergo genetic modification. Most often, GMOs are found in potatoes and tomatoes, beets and zucchini, melon and papaya.

How to distinguish transgenic products

We have already mentioned that the cost of modified and natural products is equal in our country, which means that it will definitely not work to identify potentially dangerous products by cost. Appearance will also say little to the average layman, although when acquiring large juicy peppers, cucumbers or tomatoes in early spring, one can hardly expect that they are grown exclusively in a natural way.

You will be surprised, but you should not count on the “non-GMO” inscription on the labels of some products either. It turns out that according to our legislation, the “Non-GMO” badge is placed on products containing less than 0.9% of substances with a modified gene, but even this restriction is bypassed by many manufacturers.

Another thing is the composition of the product. If you notice soy lecithin or E322 in the composition of soft drinks, cereals or baby food, you can be sure that this product is with a crossed gene. The same can be said in the presence of maltodextrin, aspartame, dextrose, glucose, vegetable fat and soybean oil. And be sure to look at the country of origin. Remember, almost 70% of all GMO products come from the USA, followed by Canada and France.

What remains to be done by ordinary buyers? Organic products exist, you just have to look for them.

By purchasing products with such a designation, you, of course, will not protect yourself from GMOs, but you will be sure that they have undergone strict quality control. In addition, try to purchase products from those farms, the quality and naturalness of which you are sure. As a last resort, buy appropriate vegetables and fruits in season while you can, as crops sold in winter and early spring tend to be cross-bred.

Trends recent years say that the number of genetically modified foods in the world will only increase. However, this does not mean at all that we should be led by manufacturers and use products that we are not sure are safe. Look for natural vegetables and fruits or grow them yourself, they are the ones that bring us health and benefits!

In general, foods containing GMOs can be divided into three categories:

1. Products containing GM ingredients (mainly transgenic corn and soybeans). These additives are introduced into food products as structuring, sweetening, coloring agents, and also as substances that increase the protein content.

2. Processing products of transgenic raw materials (for example, bean curd, soy milk, chips, corn flakes, tomato paste).

3. Transgenic vegetables and fruits, and soon, possibly, animals that are directly used for food.

When buying products in a store, labels can indirectly determine the likelihood of a product containing GMOs. If the label says that a product is made in the USA and contains soy, corn, canola or potatoes, there is a very good chance that it contains GM components.

Most products based on soy not produced in the US, but outside of Russia, can also be transgenic. If the proud inscription “vegetable protein” is on the label, it is most likely soy and very likely transgenic.

Often GMOs can be hidden behind E indices. However, this does not mean that all E supplements contain GMOs or are transgenic. You just need to know which E can, in principle, contain GMOs or their derivatives.

It is primarily soy lecithin or E 322 lecithin: binds water and fat together and is used as a fat element in formula milks, biscuits, chocolate, riboflavin (B2) otherwise known as E 101 and E 101A, can be produced from GM microorganisms. It is added to cereals, soft drinks, baby food and weight loss products. Caramel (E 150) and xanthan (E 415) can also be produced from GM grain.

Other additives that may contain GM components: E 153, E 160d, E 161c, E 308-9, E-471, E 472a, E 473, E 475, E 476b, E 477, E479a, E 570, E 572, E 573, E 620, E 621, E 622, E 633, E 624, E 625, E951.

Sometimes on the labels the names of additives are indicated only in words, they also need to be able to navigate. Let's take a look at the most common components.

Soybean Oil: Used in sauces, spreads, cakes and well-done foods in the form of fat to add extra flavor and quality. Vegetable oil or vegetable fats: most commonly found in biscuits, hard-fried foods such as chips. Maltodextrin: A type of starch that acts as a "master agent" used in baby food, powdered soups, and powdered desserts.

Glucose or Glucose Syrup: Sugar, which can be made from cornstarch, is used as a sweetener. Found in drinks, desserts and fast food.

Dextrose: Like glucose, it can be made from cornstarch. Used in cakes, chips and cookies to achieve brown color. Also used as a sweetener in high energy sports drinks.

Aspartame, aspasvit, aspamix: A sweetener that can be produced using a GM bacterium is restricted in several countries and is reported to have received a lot of complaints, mainly related to fainting syndrome, from consumers in the United States. Aspartame is found in carbonated water, diet sodas, chewing gum, ketchups, etc.

Many people think that the label "modified starch" on a product means that the product contains GMOs. This even led to the fact that in 2002 the Legislative Assembly of the Perm region at its meeting included yoghurts with modified starch in the list of GM products illegally distributed in the region. In fact, modified starch is obtained chemically without the use of genetic engineering. But starch itself can have a genetically engineered origin if it was obtained from GM corn, GM potatoes.

During the test, the highest percentage of GM soybeans was found in the Veal Traditional boiled sausage produced by the Cherkizovsky plant. GMIs were most often found in the products of the same manufacturer, as well as in the products of the D.E.C. V.S. company (trademark "Rollton").

The situation, according to environmentalists, is aggravated by the fact that the Chinese government is considering the possibility of legalizing the industrial production of GM rice. The Greens believe that the Russians will suffer the most from the actions of the Chinese authorities - deliveries of the product from this country account for more than 60% of all our rice imports.

However, in this case there are not only minuses, but also pluses. Indeed, until now, rice supplied to Russia was formally considered unmodified, and no checks were made for the content of GMI in it. Therefore, no one can say how many transgenes we have already eaten and will eat again. If the consumer has information about where the rice comes from, he will be able to decide for himself whether to buy this product or not.

Environmentalists, however, see the problem not so much in the cereal itself, which can really be abandoned, but in the distribution of products with the addition of rice flour, including many children's products - milk formulas and cereals, noodles, semi-finished products. Manufacturers, as a rule, do not indicate the country where the ingredients come from.

I would like to point out that "Indica", a term found on rice packs, is not the original name of any variety. It just means long grain rice. It may also be from China.

Is it possible to distinguish modified fruits and vegetables from natural ones?

Too clean, little different from each other potato tubers or perfectly shaped tomatoes - a reason to think. I emphasize that food additives for any purpose (technological, to “improve” consumer qualities) can be included in dietary supplements as well. Therefore, it is important to know which of the food additives are prohibited or dangerous.

I saw how dairy production works. Only milk after that is not very desirable to drink.

And only raw cow's milk can be consumed. You can make yogurt from the store, and not from anyone, but preferably from the one on which it is written that it is made from natural (whole) cow's milk (its fat content is usually indicated as 3.4-6%). Drinking such milk in its pure form is not worth it, because it is pasteurized and with its regular use, after a while, the joints will start to hurt - most likely due to the deposition of inorganic calcium in them, which appears during pasteurization (it passes from an organically bound form to an inorganic one) . But you can make yogurt out of it - it turns out quite well and does not cause problems.

But any milk normalized for fat content is a real poison. And even yogurt from such milk turns out to be unimportant, except that from milk with a fat content of no more than 1% - lactobacilli at the very least cope with such concentrations of modified milk fat.

Soybean Oil: Used in sauces, spreads, cakes and well-done foods in the form of fat to add extra flavor and quality. Vegetable oil or vegetable fats: most commonly found in biscuits, hard-fried foods such as chips. Maltodextrin: A type of starch that acts as a "master agent" used in baby food, powdered soups, and powdered desserts.
Glucose or Glucose Syrup: Sugar, which can be made from cornstarch, is used as a sweetener. Found in drinks, desserts and fast food.
Dextrose: Like glucose, it can be made from cornstarch. Used in cakes, chips and cookies to achieve brown color. Also used as a sweetener in high energy sports drinks.

Many people think that the label "modified starch" on a product means that the product contains GMOs. This even led to the fact that in 2002 the Legislative Assembly of the Perm region at its meeting included yoghurts with modified starch in the list of GM products illegally distributed in the region. In fact, modified starch is obtained chemically without the use of genetic engineering. But starch itself can have a genetically engineered origin if it was obtained from GM corn, GM potatoes.

During the test, the highest percentage of GM soybeans was found in the Veal Traditional boiled sausage produced by the Cherkizovsky plant. GMIs were most often found in the products of the same manufacturer, as well as in the products of the D.E.C. V.S. company (trademark "Rollton").

The situation, according to environmentalists, is aggravated by the fact that the Chinese government is considering the possibility of legalizing the industrial production of GM rice. The Greens believe that the Russians will suffer the most from the actions of the Chinese authorities - deliveries of the product from this country account for more than 60% of all our rice imports.

However, in this case there are not only minuses, but also pluses. Indeed, until now, rice supplied to Russia was formally considered unmodified, and no checks were made for the content of GMI in it. Therefore, no one can say how many transgenes we have already eaten and will eat again. If the consumer has information about where the rice comes from, he will be able to decide for himself whether to buy this product or not.

Ecologists, however, see the problem not so much in the cereal itself, which can really be abandoned, but in the distribution of products with the addition of rice flour, including many children's products - milk formulas and cereals, noodles, semi-finished products. Manufacturers, as a rule, do not indicate the country where the ingredients come from.

I would like to point out that "Indica", a term found on rice packs, is not the original name of any variety. It just means long grain rice. It may also be from China.

Is it possible to distinguish modified fruits and vegetables from natural ones?

Too clean, slightly different from each other potato tubers or perfectly shaped tomatoes - a reason to think. I emphasize that food additives for any purpose (technological, to “improve” consumer qualities) can be included in dietary supplements as well. Therefore, it is important to know which of the food additives are prohibited or dangerous.

I saw how dairy production works. Only milk after that is not very desirable to drink.

And only raw cow's milk can be consumed. You can make yogurt from the store, and not from anyone, but preferably from the one on which it is written that it is made from natural (whole) cow's milk (its fat content is usually indicated as 3.4-6%). Drinking such milk in its pure form is not worth it, because it is pasteurized and with its regular use, the joints will start to hurt after a while - most likely due to the deposition of inorganic calcium in them, which appears during pasteurization (it passes from an organically bound form to an inorganic one). But you can make yogurt out of it - it turns out quite well and does not cause problems.

But any milk normalized for fat content is a real poison. And even yogurt from such milk turns out to be unimportant, except that from milk with a fat content of no more than 1% - lactobacilli at the very least cope with such concentrations of modified milk fat.

What are anti-GMOs saying?

It turned out that GMO corn, potatoes and soybeans are much more expensive. In addition, genetically modified plants do not produce viable seeds at all. That is, first of all, it is beneficial only to suppliers of planting material.

Another important disadvantage is that cultivated GMO plants in the field produce hybrids with wild plants. One can only imagine what mutants will be on our planet in a few decades.

Among other things, international terrorism may receive a new direction. After all, you can create so many new and unknown viruses, which will be very, very difficult to cope with, since when creating them, it is possible to lay down any qualities.
