Program showing fps in games. FPS Utilities

FPS or FPS is the number of frames that are displayed on the screen in one second. In games, it depends on the graphics settings set, the performance of the graphics adapter, the level of graphics in the game itself (its hardware requirements), optimization and version of the video card driver, and the availability of free hardware resources.

There is no optimal FPS value for a particular game. In simple strategies, a little more than 24 frames per second is enough - it is at this frequency of changing pictures that they are perceived human brain like a continuous video. For dynamic 3D games, 40-60 fps will be more comfortable. At a lower value (depending on the game, scene), the picture will be blurry or the video sequence will turn into a smooth frame change.

The speed of changing pictures with a frequency of more than 60 frames per second is superfluous, and only loads the video card with unnecessary calculations. Therefore, in many applications for monitoring fps and games, there is an option to limit this indicator to 60. Let's consider how you can find out FPS in games, for which there are many solutions.

Fraps

The utility has not been supported for several years, but interest in it is slowly falling. The benchmark displays the frame rate in any of the corners of the display as an overlay. The overlay is disabled with a hotkey. Using the same hotkeys or their combinations, you can take screenshots with an overlay.

After the termination of support, Fraps became its direct competitor.

  1. To solve the problem, run the application and go to Plugins.
  2. Activate the "FPS overlay" option, after which you can change the colors to display the values: current, maximum, minimum fixed, etc.
  3. Start the game and in the upper left corner you will see dynamically changing numbers.

Not much different from previous utilities. Go to the "Settings" settings, in the "FPS" section, activate the "Enable in-game FPS monitor" item.

During the installation process, do not refuse to install RivaTuner Statistics Server, monitoring will not work without the server.

  1. Go to the settings by clicking on the button in the form of a gear.
  2. In the "Monitoring" tab, activate the "Frame Rate" and "Show in Overlay Display" options.
  3. To control the overlay (hide/display) in the "OED" tab, specify a hot key in the "Toggle visibility of the OED" field.

Steam

In the Steam settings, in the "In game" section, activate the "Enable Steam overlay in game" option and select "Enable" in the "Show frame rate" drop-down list.

  1. Click "FPS" in the main window.
  2. Check the "Show in position" box, and select a location for the overlay on the screen.
  3. Specify a key to show and hide the overlay as needed.

Additionally, it will show the load of each processor core and their temperature, status random access memory and graphics adapter. In the settings, unnecessary values \u200b\u200b(from sensors, for example) are disabled.

The utility is designed to optimize game settings in accordance with the power of the video card. It is recommended to install after installation latest version video driver.

  1. Hold Alt + Z to bring up the overlay.
  2. Visit the app settings.
  3. Click on the "Display HUD" link.
  4. Select the location of the counter on the screen and click on the button of the same name.
  5. Press Alt + F12 in game to display the overlay.

There are still many utilities for evaluating FPS in games, but the difference between them is not significant.

The number of frames per second displays the number of frames displayed on the computer monitor in that very second. How more quantity frames, the smoother the picture is seen by the user in games. For comfortable game You need at least 60 frames per second. On gaming computers, the FPS can exceed 100 frames per second, making the game really comfortable. Therefore, users often wonder how to enable the display of the number of frames per second on their computer in any game.

This article will tell you how to see FPS in games on Windows 10 different ways. There are really a lot of programs showing FPS in games today. But in most cases, users can easily do without third-party programs using only the utilities of their video card manufacturer or, for example, Steam.

AMD Radeon Settings

Recently, users with video cards from the Red side have noticed global update utilities accompanying the driver. Instead of AMD Catalyst, users received updated AMD Radeon Settings, which have modern interface and wide possibilities.

Now AMD Radeon Settings are already able to display the number of frames per second, the use of a video card, processor, and others. All parameters can be configured directly in the game using hotkeys: Alt+R allows you to set performance indicators, Ctrl+Shift+O toggles performance overlays.

GeForce Experience

NVidia has released the GeForce Experience companion program for its graphics cards, which expands the capabilities of the drivers. The GeForce Experience program allows you not only to show FPS in games, but also to share your videos, screenshots and live streams of gameplay with friends.

Steam

Steam is Valve's premier digital distribution service for computer games and software. It is Steam that most users use to download many games.

The Steam program allows you to enable a handy FPS counter in all games. Regardless of whether you added the game to the library from the store or from a local disk, you just need to turn on the frames per second counter in the settings.

It is possible to set the frame per second counter in any corner, and also here you can turn on the high contrast of the frame counter.

Fraps

Not a big utility that allows you to quickly and conveniently show FPS in games. Users just need to download two megabytes and install the utility on their computer. You can download the free version on the official website of the program.

To enable the FPS counter in games, you need to open the Fraps program and go to the tab 99 FPS. Next in paragraph Overlay Hotkey specify a hot key to enable the counter in the game and below select the position of the counter.

Conclusion

The number of frames per second is an important parameter by which you can determine the level of performance of the computer as a whole. Many users compare the performance of video cards from different manufacturers. For a comfortable game, the user needs at least 60 frames per second.

Many programs installed on your computer can display the counter of the number of frames in games. Not many users know how to enable FPS display in GeForce Experience, AMD Radeon Settings or Steam. Users have no idea at all that they are able to replace third-party programs that show FPS in games.

Therefore, first of all, see if there is one of these programs on your computer, and only then you should pay attention to programs from other manufacturers. And then just wait until Microsoft adds the ability to display the number of frames in .

The number of frames per second is the main indicator for modern gamers. Some are content with a value of 30 FPS, others must definitely play at 60. But how to correctly check how many FPS the computer gives out in the game at certain settings? For this, programs are used to show FPS in games.

How to check FPS in game?

There are tons of videos on the internet that show gamers playing their favorite games. If you want to intelligently enable FPS display or record your gameplay, Fraps screen capture tool will be useful for you. Downloading the Fraps installation file takes a few seconds - the file size is only 2.2 MB. The next step in downloading and running Fraps is to activate the aforementioned file and follow the prompts of the standard setup wizard. Downloading and installing Fraps on a Windows computer is a simple process that even an inexperienced user can handle in no time. The application interface is quite simple and intuitive. The program has the following tabs:

  • General - Enable or disable several general options, such as enabling Fraps on startup, keeping the Fraps window above other applications;
  • 99 FPS - choose where to save tests, hotkey checkpoint and overlays, overlay corner and so on;
  • Movies - select a hotkey and video capture quality, as well as a place to save the video;
  • Screenshots - Select a screen capture hotkey and a location to save screenshots.

If you select the upper right corner as the overlay angle, when you start the game in this corner, information will appear on how many frames per second the computer produces. The FPS meter will continue to update as the game continues.

To access all the features offered by Fraps, you only need to press the assigned hotkeys. By default, a screenshot can be taken by pressing the F10 hotkey. If you check the "Repeat screen capture every 10 seconds" box, Fraps will keep taking screenshots until F10 is pressed again. If there are not enough screenshots and you need to record a video, use hot key F9. Fraps will start recording based on the specified video capture settings. To see screenshots or videos you have taken, click the View button on the Movies or Screenshots tab.

For Fraps to do its job, it must run in background. In order not to open many tabs on the taskbar, the manufacturers took care of the users and equipped the program with the ability to minimize it to the system tray. The trial version has several limitations: you cannot record for more than 30 seconds, screenshots are saved only as BMP, the video has a watermark, loop recording is disabled. To get the full functionality of the application, you need to pay for a license.

Advantages:

  • Fraps takes very little time to download and install.
  • The colorful interface is very easy to use.
  • To access the functions that Fraps has to offer, hotkeys are used - they can be reassigned.
  • View the real FPS value, screenshots, video recording during the game - compare your gaming experience.
  • Fraps icon on the taskbar.

Trial Disadvantages:

  • Loop video recording is disabled.
  • The video is watermarked.
  • Video no longer than 30 seconds.
  • For screenshots only BMP format.

The second feature of Fraps is to record videos or screenshots of games using DirectX or OpenGL. The program perfectly adapts to the requirements of the user. When recording a game, you can set the video size in pixels and the number of frames per second recorded. Video can be recorded along with audio. The program can take screenshots, putting information about the date and serial number in them. Screenshots can also be taken automatically.

When testing computer performance, Fraps displays the number of frames per second used to play in-game animations. Parameters can be set during tests, save results to hard disk, and generate statistics. In addition, here you can find the results of the PC performance test.

One of the most interesting features of FRAPS, a screen capture tool designed for gamers, is designed to show the FPS of games in the corner of the screen. But, alas, the application has not been updated since February 2013. Therefore, most gamers began to look for an alternative. And she is! FPS Monitor is a handy tool that displays the FPS counter and other useful hardware information as an overlay on the game - GPU temperature, CPU usage, RAM used and more.

By default, FPS Monitor shows a Sysinfo overlay in the upper left corner - it provides data to display FPS, CPU temperature and load, GPU temperature and load, RAM usage, etc. This overlay is not fixed in one place - it can be dragged to another place . You can also customize how the overlay appears and what information it provides.

FPS Monitor is not free - the demo version has many limitations. Upon launch, a notification will appear stating that the program's display control is disabled in the trial version, overlay and extension settings are not saved, and the screen displays the inscription "Demo". To get rid of these "prohibitions", you need to purchase a license, which costs approximately $10.

Thanks to FPS Monitor, you can easily measure FPS and get other information about the equipment right during the game. The FPS Monitor in-game overlay features an FPS counter, temperatures and CPU usage, how much RAM the PC is using, and more.

Advantages:

  • The software is downloaded and installed quickly and easily.
  • Three types of overlays are available: Sysinfo, signature text, time.
  • Each overlay can be customized.
  • FPS Monitor can run tests.
  • Alerts available.
  • FPS Monitor can block the launch of certain processes.

Disadvantages of the free version:

  • monitoring control is disabled;
  • overlay and extension settings are not saved;
  • the symbol "Demo" is superimposed on the screen.

Good day!

There are always a lot of questions regarding FPS, and they are asked even at work (well, I won’t analyze the moral side in this article)...

In general, every game lover, sooner or later, will learn about such an indicator as FPS (it usually finds out when the game starts to slow down, freeze, the picture is distorted, twitches, etc.).

FPS is the number of frames per second shown on your screen. The more frames per second on the screen - the better: the game will run smoother, the movements of the characters will be more natural, you will see them clearly and well, and have time to react to all events.

The FPS indicator, most often, reflects the real performance of your hardware: video card, processor, and the entire computer / laptop as a whole (I do not take those cases when FPS is affected, for example, by viruses ...).

In this article, I will provide some useful utilities that will come in handy for tracking FPS, as well as answer some popular questions that all novice gamers are stuck with.

Fraps

One of the most famous programs for recording game video, taking screenshots, and viewing FPS. The program is distinguished by its low system requirements, thanks to which, game video can be recorded even on relatively weak machines.

As for the FPS, the program has a special tab where you can set the screen angle in which the value will be displayed, as well as a hot key (see screenshot below).

The screenshot below shows an example of determining the FPS - see the yellow numbers "56" in the upper left corner of the screen.

The number of FPS in the game - 56

In general, if Fraps works for you, it makes no sense to look for alternatives for determining FPS - I think it makes no sense ...

Note: in some games, FRAPS behaves unstable and FPS does not display (why is unclear). Therefore, if the program does not work for you, I recommend using the analogues below.

PlayClaw

Competitor Fraps "y. The program can: record videos and screenshots from the game, broadcast games, determine FPS, supports setting hot keys, choosing codecs for compression (which Fraps does not have).

The main window is made in a "tiled" style...

To configure the display of FPS - go to the section Plugins, then check the box next to FPS overlay and set the display colors (you can leave the default - contrasting colors).

After starting the game, you don't even need to press any buttons - the FPS will be shown automatically in the left corner of the screen (top). The screen is shown below.

FPS definition - PlayClaw (see green numbers - 62)

Overwolf

In general, the program Overwolf- this is a whole gaming world for a gamer: here are recommendations for games, and recording a game video, news, all kinds of recommendations, etc. (sorry, a lot of it is in English...).

Within the framework of this article, this program is interesting in that it determines the FPS indicator very qualitatively. In order to enable FPS display in Overwolf, you need to go to the settings (Settings), then open the FPS section, and check the box next to "Enable in-game FPS monitor" (as in the screenshot below).

Actually, now when you start the game, you will see the number of frames in any corner of the screen (depending on the settings you have chosen).

By the way, the program supports the Russian language, works in all modern versions of Windows: 7, 8, 10.

FPS Monitor

This program differs from many others in that it shows not only the number of FPS, but also the load of each CPU core, the load on the video card, the state of the RAM, etc. I.e. if your game slows down - you can find out which of the hardware is under the greatest load and can not cope (for example, to help solve frequently asked question: "what does not pull, video card or processor?") .

I note that the program is quite "flexible" and allows you to include only those readings that you need, and, of course, place them in the corner of the screen where it is more convenient for you.

Of the minuses: the program is paid (albeit inexpensive). Does not support some old games (incompatibility...).

FPS Questions

What should be the FPS for a comfortable game

FPS of 60 is considered normal for all games. (unless, of course, we are talking about professional players who have their own tasks and requirements...). I note that when the FPS is less than 30, it becomes uncomfortable to play many games, and sometimes even impossible!

That is, the most favorable FPS range for a comfortable game is from 40 to 60.

In general, a lot depends on the game itself:

  • if this is a turn-based strategy, then even 20 FPS may be enough for pleasant games;
  • if a dynamic shooter (shooter) - then 50 FPS may not be enough ...

Naturally, in each game your FPS will be different, and constantly changing. I will say even more - in each level of the game (or location, map), FPS can be different, since the graphics of each level can be different from each other. In addition, when some effects appear (or disappear) - FPS can change significantly.

What determines FPS, how to increase it

  1. From the performance of your hardware: video card, processor and system as a whole;
  2. From the game you want to run;
  3. From the graphics parameters and settings in the game (filters, resolution, etc.);
  4. From the version of the video driver, its settings.
  5. The number of FPS can also be affected by: heat components (processor, for example); viruses, Windows errors, etc.

Can dust affect FPS

The fact is that dust can settle on small ventilation holes on the laptop / PC case, clog the processor and video card radiators. As a result, air exchange will deteriorate and heat will not leave the computer case. The temperature starts to rise...

But when the temperature rises, the computer processor may start to slow down (i.e., auto-protection is triggered: to reset the temperature, the processor starts to work more slowly). If this does not help, then when a certain critical temperature point is reached, the computer simply turns off.

So, dust, of course, can affect the number of FPS (though indirectly).

How to clean your computer from dust:

Cleaning a laptop from dust at home:

Does Windows version affect FPS in games

Surveillance! A lot of users note that after switching from Windows 7 to Windows 10, some games have become less and less slow down ...

Generally, it does. And sometimes it is significant. For example, in the "old" times, I kept Windows 2000 on the disk for a long time (although Windows XP has already been released). The fact is that many games worked much better on Windows 2000: the FPS was higher (and the video drivers, as a rule, have already been worked out for older OSes and all the changes have been made to them. Developers will get their hands on the new OS of the system .. .). Then, of course, service packs came out for Windows XP, and it was brought to a "normal" level of work ...

In general, OS optimization has a strong influence: it's one thing to run a game on a tuned, cleaned from "garbage" and optimized system, it's quite another - on a "cluttered" one. The difference can be quite significant: from normal game on the first, to terrible brakes on the second (with the same "iron" filling of computers).

By the way, as for the same Windows 10, then in its arsenal appeared Game Mode .

The developers of the system are trying to make it as convenient as possible, both for gamers and for the rest. So far, I don’t have specific figures for increasing productivity thanks to this mode, but in general, it has a positive effect.

Do I need to "make" FPS more than 60

In general, the more FPS - the better and more comfortable it will be to play. But if the difference between 20 and 60 FPS is noticeable to the naked eye, then the difference between 60 and 90 FPS is not even noticed by every experienced gamer.

The point here is still in the monitor: the most common classic LCD monitor usually produces a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Accordingly, even if you have an FPS of more than 60, you will still see 60 (because the monitor simply will not show more frames per second), which means there is no point in increasing the FPS...

Another thing is if you have a monitor with a refresh rate of, for example, 100 Hz - then it makes sense to raise the FPS to 100. The picture quality can simply be discouraging, especially if you compare the image quality at the same time with a classic monitor (see photo above). True, the price tags for such "things" are still "biting", and most often they are used by professional players. In general, in general, if you are not a sophisticated gamer, then chasing 60+ FPS to the detriment of your wallet probably does not make much sense yet. Anyway, in a year or two, such equipment will become cheaper ...

By the way, if you have low FPS or many modern games do not run at all - do not despair! Not so long ago, an article about memories "appeared" on my site: it presents the best hit games of the past, many of them will give odds to modern novelties!

Greatest hits of the past (can be played even on old laptops and PCs) -

There is a list of programs that have the function of displaying FPS in the game. But what is it? FPS - the number of frames per second that the user sees on the PC screen during the game. The higher this indicator, the better. This is especially true for shooters. Special programs offer to monitor this value. Let's look at them in more detail.

One of the most famous representatives of this list. Fraps features include screen recording, screenshots and, of course, it is suitable for measuring FPS in games. Fraps works on top of all windows, so you don't have to switch between processes.

This program has a simple interface and little functionality, but it is quite enough for the purposes for which Fraps is downloaded. The trial version is distributed free of charge and is enough to understand whether the program is worthy of attention.

CAM

CAM is designed to monitor the entire system as a whole. It is also suitable for viewing the number of frames in games. In addition to this information, the screen displays the load on the processor and video card, their temperatures. It contains everything to be constantly aware of the status of your PC.

The program is distributed absolutely free of charge and has the Russian language. CAM will always notify you of critical loads or system temperatures, which will help you avoid system failures. All notifications can be configured in the corresponding menu.

FPS Monitor

The name speaks for itself. The program is great for showing FPS in games, and also helps to monitor other system parameters. There are several preset scenes for different modes of operation.

The trial version is distributed free of charge and has limited functionality. Full version costs 400 rubles and has no restrictions. In any of their versions there is a Russian interface language.

Overwolf

The main goal of this representative is not an FPS counter, but the creation of various interfaces for games. However, in the settings, you can set the parameter for monitoring frames per second. After that, you just need to go into the game with the program turned on and the indicator will be displayed in the place that you specified in the settings.

It is distributed absolutely free of charge, almost the entire interface is translated into Russian and there are many add-ons that can be downloaded or purchased in the internal store. Installed plugins and skins are placed in the library.

MSI Afterburner

A multifunctional program that will help you configure your computer and improve its performance. With MSI Afterburner, you can set performance or graphics settings, change cooler settings, and more.

The functionality of the program includes full monitoring of the system, including displaying the number of frames per second in games.

Using Autoburner, you can overclock the video card, but this should only be done by experienced users. The program is distributed completely free of charge, but not completely Russified.
