Manufacturing technology

The technological process of manufacturing PC processors has a long history, and the main efforts of development engineers have always been aimed at reducing the size of the elementary transistor, which is the main switching element of the processor chip. There can be hundreds of millions and even billions of such transistors in modern processors. It is not difficult to imagine what size the transistor should have. Roughly, we can say that processors have gone from 100 micron technology to 22 nm and less (one nm is just one billionth of a meter!). It is clear that the smaller the area occupied by the transistor, the less heat it will generate, in other words, the operating temperature of the processor will decrease.

Processor manufacturer

Today, two global companies are leading in the production of processors for PCs - Intel and AMD. Intel's share is about 80% of all processors produced in the world, and AMD accounts for 10 to 20% (the rest is produced by other, less well-known companies). Such a delicate technological process as the production of processors and other microcircuits requires perfectly clean production, and this requires additional investments and increases the cost of the microcircuits produced. AMD has chosen the release of budget processors as its main direction, so the purity of their production is inferior to Intel, although AMD processors are really cheaper than their analogues from Intel. But the operating temperature of AMD processors, all other things being equal, is higher than the temperature of Intel processors.

Number of processor cores

A multi-core processor is a processor that has several processor cores of the same type, implemented either on a single chip or on several, but in the same package. Of course, during the operation of such a processor, heat will be released from each core, therefore, in the general case, a multi-core processor should heat up more than a single-core one. But due to the common housing and special thermal protection measures, the amount of heat generated will be lower than the amount of heat generated by each core.

CPU operating frequency

For each processor and for each core in a multi-core processor, the manufacturer determines its nominal operating frequency. This frequency is one of the determining factors in the speed of the processor and the performance of the entire computer system. With an increase in the operating frequency, the core temperature rises, and with a decrease, it decreases. The operating frequency of the core is determined by the product of the clock frequency generated by the generator on motherboard, by the multiplication factor built into the processor by its manufacturer. An attempt to increase both of these (called overclocking the processor) leads to an increase in the operating frequency and to an increase in its temperature.

Methods and quality of heat removal from the processor

The most common way to remove heat from the processor is to install a heat sink on the processor case, on which a fan is mounted to remove heat from the heat sink to the surrounding area. The quality of such a heat sink depends on the following factors:

  • Reliability of fastening of the radiator to the processor case;
  • Good thermal contact between the processor case and the heatsink case;
  • Fan dissipation capacity required amount heat.

What ensures good thermal contact between the processor case and the heatsink? This contact should not allow any gaps in this connection, possible due to unevenness in the processor cover and heatsink pad. Thermally conductive paste is used to fill such gaps. It tends to dry out over time, so the first thing to do when the processor temperature rises is to remove the heatsink along with the fan and replace the thermal paste.
If this does not help, then you need to pay attention to the fan speed. In extreme cases, it may not rotate at all, which “provides” an increase in processor temperature. A common cause of this fan behavior is dried grease (or lack of it) in the bearings. It is better to remove the fan and put a few drops of normal machine grease into both bearings - upper and lower.

CPU temperature monitoring

There are many different utilities that allow you to monitor the temperature of the processor. But it is hardly advisable to use programs that carry out continuous temperature control - they will only take away processor time and user attention. You need to refer to them periodically, just to make sure that the processor is working properly. And if you suddenly begin to experience inexplicable drops in the speed of the computer, and, moreover, freezes, then it's time to check the operating temperature of the processor. This is proposed to be done using a modern and unique program for monitoring the entire computer - AIDA64.

Depending on all the factors mentioned above that affect the temperature of the processor, you can give typical values ​​​​of this indicator for different processors.

  • Intel processors - from 30 to 60 degrees Celsius, the maximum is about 70. In idle, the usual temperature is no more than 35, and under load it can rise to 60-70;
  • AMD processors - 40 to 70 degrees Celsius. The maximum is about 80. In idle, the usual temperature is about 45, under load it can rise to 80.

It should also be taken into account that laptops have a rather weak heat dissipation system, therefore, especially with AMD processors, even in idle, the temperature can reach even higher values ​​... however, you will no longer be afraid of unusual indicators, because you know what temperature the processor should to be.

CPU temperature (CPU) and its nuclei. For me it is 35-40 degrees.

From my own experience, I will say that the temperature of the processor on a laptop in a calm state should be kept within 40-60 degrees. And under load should not exceed 75-80 degrees.

Temperatures over 90 degrees are critical for any processor. At this temperature, irreversible destructive changes begin in the silicon that makes up the processor. Usually, when the temperature reaches 90-100 degrees, the device’s self-preservation instinct kicks in, and the laptop / computer turns off abruptly, saving its life. 🙂

As you understand, the temperature at rest is not an indicator. The most important thing for you and me is to find out what values ​​​​the temperature reaches under heavy load (games, heavy programs, watching HD video).

How to check computer temperature under load?

I will please you, you do not need to download additional software - you can give the maximum load on the processor and video card using the functionality of the program AIDA. Go to the Tools menu System stability test.

In the window that appears, check the Stress GPU checkbox (To check the video card at the same time) and click Start. After pressing this button, the processor and video card will be artificially loaded at 100% power.

We are waiting for 5-10 minutes, watching how the temperature of your processor and video card rises, and how the fans in your laptop or system unit begin to spin more and more powerfully.

In advanced cases, even one minute is enough to understand that the laptop needs to be urgently cleaned of dust and change the thermal paste. As we remember, the critical temperature for the processor and video card is 90 degrees. When this temperature is reached, it is better to press the Stop button in the test window so as not to force the device once again.

So, let's see what my computer shows after 7 minutes of testing in AIDA64:

As we can see, my Scythe super-quiet CPU cooler and GD900 thermal paste do a great job of keeping the i5-4460's CPU from getting over 58 degrees, which I think is very good.

But the temperature of the MSI GeForce GTX 760 video card is rather high (81 degrees). However, I did not panic ahead of time, but after googling, I came to the conclusion that such a temperature for this video card is quite normal. Sometimes it happens.

What else I want to draw your attention to in this window is the parameter CPU Throttling.

Throttling is when the processor, when overheated, begins to forcibly reduce its power so as not to burn out completely. If during the test the CPU Throttling inscription lights up red and the computer starts to "stupid" - this also means that it is urgent to clean the cooling system.

  1. Clean the cpu cooler from dust. And not only the cooler, but everything where the hand will reach. This is the most common reason for a computer to overheat. Use a soft brush to brush off all the dust inside the system unit. Then blow it out of there or carefully collect it with a vacuum cleaner without damaging the chips. Most often, this measure is enough to reduce the temperature of the processor.
  2. Check case coolers. Maybe they are just not doing their job. Either they are not enough, or it is time to change them. Coolers that are installed to ventilate the PC case are usually cheap and wear out quickly, start to play, make noise, etc. Install new coolers with the largest possible diameter. They will run quieter and more efficiently.
  3. Remove the system unit from heat sources. This is also a common mistake made by beginners or inexperienced people. The computer itself generates heat during operation, and if it also stands next to the stove, then no fans will save it from overheating. Any electronics should be kept away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
  4. Change thermal paste. Perhaps the thermal paste, which is a heat conductor between the processor and the heatsink of the processor cooling system, has ceased to fulfill its duties. Air has reappeared between the heatsink and the processor. Then you need to change the thermal paste. Read.
