Hydrangeas paniculata: new varieties. Tree and paniculate hydrangeas: propagation and care

Hydrangea from A to Z - types, planting and plant care. Useful information for summer residents about caring for hydrangea in a suburban area. Everyone who sees a blooming hydrangea for the first time falls in love with it immediately and irrevocably; I did not escape this fate, once I saw a huge bush growing in the middle of a green lawn and blooming in large caps of white. Of course, I planted hydrangea in my garden at the dacha and every year I admire its flowering, this shrub looks so decorative.

Hydrangea came to European countries in 1820, since then this plant has been successfully grown in many famous European parks and in summer cottages in Russia. Now in suburban areas you can find a huge variety of hydrangea species, with different colors and flower sizes, adapted to different climatic conditions - this is the merit of breeders who, since the 19th century, have been constantly working to create new plant species.

Types of hydrangea

Among the huge diversity of this plant, we can highlight several of the most common species, which are quite frost-resistant, which is not unimportant, and can decorate any garden.

Hydrangea

Among the tree-like hydrangeas, the “Annabelle” variety stands out; it is a rather tall shrub, reaching up to one and a half meters in height with large spherical inflorescences of white and cream color. Very spreading, can grow up to three meters wide. Quite unpretentious, grows quickly, reproduces by layering, winters well without shelter in a rather harsh climate. In snowless winters, the shoots may freeze slightly, but recover well after pruning.

In the first years, it is better to mulch new plants purchased from a nursery with dry leaves, tie them and wrap them in dry straw or spruce branches so that young, immature branches do not break under the weight of snow. The leaves of this variety are bright, retain their green color until late autumn, and the pure white inflorescences can reach up to 30 centimeters. Lying tightly to each other they create a bush of incredible beauty.

Another variety of tree hydrangea called “Grandiflora” is no less beautiful, its inflorescences are creamy, also very large, the leaves are elongated, and it blooms from June to September.

I would like to note another common variety of tree hydrangea, this is “Sterillis”; this variety is distinguished by its greenish-white, very dense hemispherical inflorescences. Blooms from July to October.

All forms of tree hydrangea are demanding on soil moisture and require regular, abundant watering.

Hydrangeas look great in single and group plantings together with barberries, spirea, and also go well with roses, irises and other low varietal plants.

Hydrangea paniculata

Hydrangea paniculata, with good care, can reach up to 2.5 meters in height; the flowers of this plant are collected in cone-shaped panicles up to 20 centimeters long and up to 15 centimeters in diameter. The color of the inflorescences is pinkish-white, very delicate, and blooms for a long time from July to October. Looks great in a white garden.

Just like tree hydrangea, paniculata hydrangea has good frost resistance, grows just as quickly, in a couple of years forming a large bush that lives in one place for several decades.

Among the varieties of tree hydrangea, I would like to note the variety “Floribunda” with narrow white inflorescences, gradually acquiring a pink color, the earliest flowering variety is “Praecox”, its flowering begins a whole month earlier than other varieties, and the latest flowering hydrangea is “Tardiva”, which until frost will delight you with its flowering

Hydrangea petiolate

I can’t help but touch on petiolate hydrangea, because I really love vines. This species reaches a length of up to 20 meters; together with other climbing inhabitants of the garden, it can become an excellent assistant in vertical gardening, covering the wall of a house, outbuilding, or gazebo.

However, this type of hydrangea must be planted in places not blown by cold winds, otherwise parts of the shoots may freeze in the cold winter.

Hydrangea largeleaf

This species is also very popular, since its flowering will not leave anyone indifferent, its large flowers of various colors are so beautiful. Among this species there are blue, pink, white, and cream hydrangeas.

But it overwinters much worse and is grown in open ground mainly in the southern regions. In our harsh winters, it is difficult to create conditions for proper wintering for this plant, so gardeners have found a way out and grow large-leaved hydrangea in pots. Such plants overwinter at home, and in the spring they are taken out into the garden.

Hydrangea - care

For hydrangea, the most suitable are light loams with a neutral or slightly acidic reaction and well seasoned with organic matter. Depending on the iron content in the soil, inflorescences of one color or another are obtained; the acidity of the soil also affects the color; on very acidic soils, pink inflorescences become blue.

All hydrangeas are moisture-loving and in dry summers they suffer greatly without watering, which, of course, affects the flowering of plants. Tree and petiolate hydrangeas prefer to grow in partial shade, but paniculate and large-leaved hydrangeas also thrive in bright sun.

It is useful to loosen the soil around the hydrangeas at least twice a season to a depth of about 5 centimeters; this will create better conditions for growth and flowering.

Hydrangea paniculata and tree-like hydrangea must be pruned, since their inflorescences form on the shoots of the current year. Pruning can be done in March - April at the very beginning of the growing season, when the buds are just beginning to swell. If pruning is done at a later date, then flowering may not occur.

In petiolate hydrangea, only the stems that have frozen over the winter are pruned, and if the bushes are very old, then they carry out rejuvenating pruning, cutting off the entire bush, as they say, to a stump. After such pruning, hydrangea recovers well and within a year will delight you with lush flowering.

Hydrangea responds well to organic fertilizers, the bush grows quickly, the leaves and inflorescences become larger.

Sheltering hydrangeas for the winter, as I already said, is not required if the plants are mature, but it is better to mulch and wrap young plants that have not yet gained strength for the winter.

As you can see, it is not so difficult to grow a beautiful hydrangea on your own plot.

The airy floral lace of Hydrangea paniculata, which attracts admiring glances, is the dream of many owners of country houses in the Moscow region. A lush shrub with double pyramidal inflorescences, blooming from June to September, looks luxurious on lawns and in bouquets. Among the many types of garden hydrangeas, paniculata is the most acclimatized for Central Russia.

Hydrangea paniculata - introduction

Hydrangea paniculata is a shrub of the Hydrangeaceae family with a height of 1 to 3 m. In central Russia, in particular in the Moscow region, it blooms throughout the summer and even autumn. The culture is popular due to its large (up to 25 cm) beautiful pyramidal inflorescences consisting of fragrant flowers. The petals are white at first, then during the growing season (especially with temperature changes) they change color to pinkish-purple. Depending on the variety, the color change occurs quickly or slowly, completely or partially (for example, only at the base of the flower clusters).

The flowers of most varieties of hydrangea paniculata change color during the growing season.

The Japanese associate hydrangea with tenderness, sincerity, modesty and hope. They brew a ritual drink from the flower. And in the Victorian era, when the language of flowers was used to express secret feelings, hydrangea was considered a symbol of vanity, indifference and coldness.

This is a frost-resistant plant (although some varieties require shelter for the winter). It has been noticed that on loose, fertilized soils, the flower clusters of the crop are much larger and brighter, and the foliage is denser. Hydrangea paniculata prefers clayey, acidic soils. During the growing season, it needs abundant watering at the root.

Hydrangea paniculata varieties for the Moscow region

Of the many varieties of hydrangeas adapted for the Moscow region, I would like to highlight several of the most unpretentious and decorative.

Low growing varieties

Daruma (Dharuma) is a dwarf paniculate hydrangea, reaching a height of no more than 1.5 m. A plant with delicate cream flowers stands out among its relatives with its rich red stems. Flower clusters are sparse and turn pink over time. Daruma prefers neutral or acidic soils and is not picky about fertilizing. Disadvantage - in rainy summers the flowers take on a dirty pink hue.

The Daruma hydrangea variety has a lush bush with short erect shoots

Little Lime - this variety is slightly lower than the previous one (up to 1 m), with printed flower tassels filled with snow-white buds, which after some time partially turn pink. The bushes are dense, the stems are strong, dark green. The dwarf plant does not require staking and tolerates partial shade well.

Little Lime, like other low-growing varieties of paniculata hydrangea, blooms from July to September

Sunday Fraise has compact bushes that grow up to 1.3 m. Milky-white flowers are collected in pyramidal panicles, and by the end of summer they acquire a purple tint. The variety tolerates frosts well down to –25 C° and is suitable for single planting. The plant prefers loose acidic soil.

Sunday Fraze looks amazing in early September - coral-pink caps of small flowers reminiscent of lilacs

Tall varieties

Grandiflora is the most common variety of hydrangeas of this species due to its resistance to frost (down to –28 C°) and abundant flowering from July to September - this is an ideal option for the climatic zone of the Moscow region. The height of the bush is 2–2.5 m. White fragrant flowers turn pink over time. The variety is demanding on fertilizing and watering.

Grandiflora has very dense racemes with snow-white flowers, the color of which changes to dark pink towards the end of the growing season.

Hydrangea bushes of the Kyushu variety grow more than 2 m in height. The variety is frost-resistant (down to –30 C°). Inflorescences with snow-white petals do not change color, many buds do not open, so the clusters are loose and lacy. Kyushu flowers have a rich, delicate aroma. Flowering starts in the 3rd decade of June and continues until frost. Kyushu is light-loving and demanding of watering. This is the most durable hydrangea of the paniculata genus (lives more than 50 years).

Due to its resistance to frost, the Kiushu variety is excellent for growing in the Moscow region

Hydrangea Wims Red is a two-meter bush, strewn with cone-shaped brushes of cream color at the beginning of the growing season and carmine scarlet at the end. The variety is distinguished by early flowering (from mid-June), lasting until early September. Weems Red prefers slightly acidic soils and does not like liming. This variety is gas-resistant and is often used for landscaping city alleys.

Florists have noticed that when the acidity of the soil increases, the color of the inflorescences in the Weems Red hydrangea changes from pink to bright scarlet

The White Lady hydrangea has snow-white clusters of flowers in the shape of a cone with a strong aroma, gradually acquiring a peach hue and becoming less dense. The height of the bush is 2.5 m, it blooms for almost 3 months starting from mid-summer. The variety is distinguished for its high immunity and undemandingness to lighting. To maintain the decorativeness and compactness of White Lady, regular pruning is required.

For White Lady, good soil drainage and regular watering are important.

Early Sensation is a rare flower cluster with large pinkish-cream buds that become fuchsia over time. The height of the bush is 1.3–1.9 m, flowering is from July to the first days of October. This variety prefers fertile and well-lit areas.

Bouquets are often decorated with Airlie Sensation flowers.

The variety Pinky Winky is quite common in the Moscow region. The height of the bush is approximately 2 m. Conical creamy-white brushes with petals turning pink at the edges bloom from July to September. The plant is light-loving and can freeze out when young.

The Pinky Winky variety deserves attention due to its thick, dense crown and fairly tall growth.

Vanilla Fraise is an enlarged copy of Sunday Fraise, the bushes reach a height of 2.5 m. This variety has unusual flower clusters, the color of which changes from base to tip - from crimson to pinkish-cream. Vanilla, like its dwarf relative, does not freeze and grows in acidic soils. Tall bushes must be tied up.

Fading brushes of Vanilla Fraze remain decorative for a long time and are suitable for cutting for bouquets

The Frazee Melba variety has dense clusters with bright purple flowers. The new Bombshell variety has flowers that seem to be scattered throughout the bushes
If the Great Star hydrangea has flowers reaching 8 cm in diameter, it is difficult to imagine what size the brushes of these flowers can be. Magical Starlight has the same large star-shaped flowers as the Great Star, but denser brushes Diamond Rouge flowers are especially decorative towards the end of the season The Phantom variety has thick conical clusters with fragrant pale pink inflorescences. The Limelight at the beginning of the growing season has an amazing color of the inflorescences - lemon-lime. The Unique variety has flowers scattered on the brush like white moths. Bobo Hydrangea is an incredibly beautiful low-growing variety with cone-shaped pyramid-shaped clusters

Some believe that paniculate hydrangea with white inflorescences is more unpretentious and that is why flower growers in the Moscow region choose it. This is rather a misconception, since on forums you can find many positive reviews about varieties of this variety of hydrangeas, which over time change color to mauve. If paniculata hydrangea produces weak flower clusters or does not take root well after planting, it is necessary to replant the plant (maybe more than once) to a suitable place in the garden.

Hydrangea cannot be called unpretentious. Abundant flowering is achieved by regular fertilizing and watering. It grows best in open sunny areas and fertile soil. A perennial crop with luxurious flowers is receiving more and more positive reviews from flower growers in the Moscow region, and the variety of varieties allows everyone to find their own.

Hydrangea paniculata by right occupies a prominent place in garden decoration. It is rare to find shrubs that, along with being unpretentious to grow, are distinguished by excellent decorative qualities and long flowering time. If you still don’t have this shrub on your site, definitely worth getting one.

Description and characteristics, features of paniculata hydrangea

This beautiful plant is called “vessel of water” in Greek. It was brought from the island of Mauritius, which is located in the Indian Ocean back in the eighteenth century.

Since then, hydrangea has taken root well and spread throughout Europe and Asia. Both palace gardens and flower beds of ordinary citizens became her fans.

According to the description, paniculata hydrangea is bush or tree with several trunks. Many gardeners form it in the form of a tree with one trunk. The height of the plant, if not pruned, can reach more than 8-9 meters.

Leaves of the plant are oval shaped with a pointed tip. Their abundance guarantees a constant decorative appearance of the bush even without flowers.

Flowering time from June to frost. It blooms with small inflorescences collected in pyramidal panicles.

One of the features of flowering is the change in color of the inflorescences. From white at the beginning of the season, the color of the panicles changes first to pink, and by autumn to gray-green.

An adult plant is frost-resistant, does not require shelter for the winter. It is better to cover young bushes of the first and second years with spruce branches for the winter.

Shrubs are planted in May or September. But if you suddenly have a seedling in the hot summer, don’t despair.

By planting it in fertile soil and protecting it from the sun, it will take root well and will delight you with abundant flowering in 2-3 years.

Landing location choose light, but without direct sunlight. When planting on the south side, daily watering of the bush will be required.

Plant in a place protected from the winds, along walls or fences, and tie them up if necessary.

It is necessary to plant in acidic, moist soil., better in clayey or red soil. Peat and forest soil are added to the planting hole. You can sprinkle sawdust on top to retain moisture.

Due to the fairly large size of the bush, the distance between plants should be at least 1.5 meters.

Interesting: experienced gardeners add iron cans to the planting hole to obtain a blue tint of flowers.

Planting paniculata hydrangea in the ground:

Good care after planting

Care after planting consists of constantly moistening the root soil.

Do not allow the earthen clod under the plant to dry out, this will not only affect the decorative appearance of the shrub, but can also lead to its death.

It is better to over-water hydrangea than under-water. Water the plant daily in hot weather, in damp weather, on demand.

Fertilizers

Hydrangea needs regular feeding. Feeding is done once every two weeks.

It requires the presence of iron and ammonium sulfate in the soil. Therefore, nitrogen fertilizers are applied in spring and summer. In autumn, potassium salt.

The plant grows well with regular feeding with diluted mullein. In flower shops sell special complex fertilizers for Hydrangea, which contain all the necessary elements.

Shrub pruning

For lush flowering, the bush is pruned in the spring, in early April.. Last year's shoots are cut out by a third, 1-3 pairs of buds are left on them, and weak, dry branches are completely removed.

If the plant is not pruned, the flowering will not be abundant and the decorative appearance of the bush will be lost.

Pruning paniculate hydrangea in spring:

The use of pink, yellow and other hydrangeas in landscape design

The plant is widely used in landscape design for decorating flower beds, forming green hedges, and various flower ensembles.

It is combined with geraniums and ornamental grasses. Hydrangeas of different types planted along the hedge look very impressive.

Good to know: paniculata hydrangea lends itself perfectly to formative pruning, while maintaining its desired appearance for a long time. It can be shaped in the form of a tree, a ball, a cone, or other shapes.

The presence of Hydrangea paniculata in the garden will make the area beautiful and give the design a special chic and splendor.

Hydrangea paniculata is one of the four most popular species cultivated in Russia. Hydrangea paniculata gets its name from the shape of its flower. It is a variegated “panicle” at the very end of the branch, which is shrouded in large leaves of various shapes. Guide to caring for hydrangea indoors.

Hydrangea paniculata flowers are flat in shape and about 15 centimeters across. The length of one panicle is 35 centimeters, and its diameter is 20 centimeters.

The foliage of paniculate hydrangea is:

  • Velvety;
  • Serrated;
  • Serrated;
  • Broadly ovate;
  • Chereshkova;

According to the saturation and brightness of color, the foliage is located from top to bottom, from the brightest to the palest at the foot. The maximum length of a hydrangea leaf is 12 centimeters.

The difference between paniculata and tree hydrangea

The two leading types of garden hydrangeas are tree hydrangea and paniculate hydrangea. Both plants have a lot of positive qualities, but they also have disadvantages:

  1. Tree hydrangea is a typical shrub, in contrast to its paniculate counterpart, which in shape is more like a small tree, often multi-stemmed and less often single-stemmed.
  2. Paniculata hydrangea tolerates low temperatures well. Young shoots of paniculata hydrangea gain strength by autumn and are completely covered with “bark”, for this reason even they are not afraid of Russian frost. The same cannot be said about tree hydrangea. In winter, all its young shoots freeze, because they do not have time to get stronger. And the next year they produce fresh shoots again and bloom in the same color. If you cover this species under snow, then next year the bush will gain strength and again continue its path to the sun’s rays.

Both species have a wide range of colors; anyone can choose the plant that suits their liking. And it will be a wonderful addition to the natural ensemble in the garden.

    Tree hydrangea on video.

When choosing beautiful flowering plants for the garden, tree hydrangea varieties are most often preferred. They are cold-resistant enough to withstand the conditions of the average Russian climate, do not require the use of complex agricultural techniques when growing and will certainly delight caring owners with lush and long-lasting flowering for ten years.

This is perhaps the most common hydrangea in gardens in central Russia. Beautiful, of course, but too familiar. But with plants it happens like this: everything is for the time being.

The best varieties of tree hydrangea do not require special attention: they do not freeze out and bloom annually. In the spring you need to cut out old shoots, tie up the bush - that’s basically all there is to it. Then you can almost forget about tree hydrangea (H. arborescens) and confidently wait for the inevitable reward - lush flowering.

Oddly enough, gardeners are still concerned with the question: when to prune tree hydrangea?

In the spring, sap flow begins, and the hydrangea “cries,” which causes panic among the owners. It's better to cut twice. The first is in the fall, at this time only the inflorescences are cut off (the British call this decapitation) so that the fallen snow does not break the branches. ‘Annabelle’ is especially susceptible to this. The second time is pruned in the spring, before the sap begins to flow, when the buds are not particularly swollen. Or when young leaves appear, then the hydrangea stops desperately “crying.”

In tree hydrangea, pruning branches does not particularly affect the size of the inflorescences. In any case, not like the paniculata. However, it must be borne in mind that the size of the inflorescences is inversely proportional to the number of shoots.

The best varieties of winter-hardy tree hydrangeas for the Moscow region

One of the best varieties of tree hydrangeas for the Moscow region is ‘Annabelle’!

But how will he survive the winter? What if you still need shelter? And is it true that the inflorescences, without any tricks on the part of the florist, will be as huge as in the catalog? After more than a decade, we can say with confidence: the variety is wonderful!

It seems like just recently everyone was chasing 'Hayes Starburst'- the first double winter-hardy variety of hydrangeas, and then, having received the coveted plant and watching the first flowering, many were disappointed.

Apparently they dreamed of something like terry ‘Annabelle’, but here the inflorescences cannot boast of a gigantic size, the branches are thin and require support, the bush takes a long time to grow, and is no taller than a meter. Those who want a larger plant, and most importantly - right away, are unlikely to like this variety. This plant is exquisite; you cannot plant it in the far corner of the garden; the flowers can only be seen close up. And the number of branches is a matter of profit; besides, with age they will certainly become more powerful.

Another hit that appeared with us several years ago is the variety 'Incrediball'. According to the description, this variety of tree hydrangea is similar to ‘Annabelle’, but is an improved version: the flowers of ‘Incrediball’ are four times larger, and the diameter of the inflorescence is up to 30 cm! The main “trick” is that the inflorescence resembles a ball. However, some flower growers complain that they have not yet seen the promised “ball”. Again, you just have to wait. Young hydrangeas may not immediately show their varietal characteristics (although misgrading, alas, cannot be ruled out).

The variety of tree hydrangea ‘Invicibelle’ is suitable for the Moscow region, it is really winter-hardy and in the spring it turns out to be a very vigorous plant! It is pointless to discuss the shade and structure of the inflorescence: some people like them, others don’t.

As you can see in the photo, the tree hydrangea variety ‘Invicibelle’ has a transparent, airy inflorescence, the shade is quite complex - muted, dark pink:

This is unusual for Russian gardens. But ‘Invicibelle’ is interesting precisely because of its dissimilarity to other forms.

Of course, the fact that its stems lie down and its inflorescences sometimes bow their heads is not encouraging. But, firstly, these plants are very young in our country - for them to show themselves in all their glory, five years or even more must pass. Secondly, this hydrangea needs delicate supports and no less delicate neighbors.

Variegated tree hydrangea, even if it appears, is unlikely to overwinter in our climate without shelter. It's a different matter with purple or yellow leaves. Breeders should have thought about these plants already!

Her inflorescences were almost like those of the variety ‘Grandiflora’, just smaller. This miracle lived for four years and then froze to death in one winter with little snow. It was necessary to take the plant more seriously - at least mulch the tree trunk in the fall.

What was the name of the cultivar? Experts unanimously asserted that such a plant does not exist and cannot exist.

Look at the photos of tree hydrangeas, the names of which are given above:

A clear success of breeders - a new variety of tree hydrangea ‘White Dome’(sometimes sold under the name 'Dardom'). In Russia, this hydrangea has not yet found many fans. It seems that it is simply because it is not easy to find it. Its inflorescences are large, flat, bearing sterile flowers only along the edge. They are so delicate - they resemble Venetian lace or a ballerina's tutu. The plant itself is powerful, the branches do not lie down.
