Bicycle bag: types of finished products and manufacturing instructions. Large Bike Frame Bag Materials Needed for Bike Pants

Every cyclist, regardless of what purpose the bicycle serves for him, sooner or later begins to think about how to transport the things he needs on the road or at his destination. When the pockets do not hold everything you need to take with you, and the backpack does not add comfort during the trip, the question arises about purchasing some kind.

Of course, bike bags are sold in sports stores, but what if you haven’t found a model suitable for your bike on sale? Then it makes sense to make this simple accessory yourself. If you are planning a long trip or bike trip, then one of the most convenient options for transporting things will be a bicycle saddle bag.

Various mounting options

When choosing, you must first determine the purpose of the bag, because depending on its dimensions and placement, the comfort of the trip will be determined. For example, a bag that is too large and placed in the wrong part of the vehicle can shift the center of gravity, making it not only difficult to ride the bike, but also increases the likelihood of falling.

There are different types of bike bag fastenings:

  • On the steering wheel. Small bags for various small items are preferred here; it is not recommended to attach large, heavy bags to the steering wheel.
  • . The advantage of this type of fastening is the ability to easily fix the bike bag, which is just as easy to remove from the bike. The rear trunk is a typical place to transport cargo, and one of the most common options is the "bag-pants", so named due to its appearance.

How to do

So, if you decide to make such an accessory for your bike yourself, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • sewing machine;
  • scissors;
  • Velcro, clips or hooks;
  • zippers;
  • fabric (preferably waterproof and thick enough);
  • reflective strip;
  • tape measure, ruler for measurements;
  • paper or cardboard for the pattern.

  1. Regardless of whether the bag will be attached under the saddle or in the triangle of the frame, it is necessary to take measurements for the selected product option and transfer them to paper. The main thing is to calculate the dimensions in such a way that subsequently the product’s dimensions do not interfere with the road.
  2. Now the pattern from the paper should be transferred to the fabric.
  3. Sew in a zipper. First you need to make an incision in the fabric at the intended location and baste it by hand so that it does not slip off when you attach it. You can also equip the product with additional pockets in the same way.
  4. Mark on the fabric the places where the bike bag fixation system will be located and sew on the fasteners.
  5. If desired, you can add a reflective strip to the product, which is a very valuable attribute for cyclists. It is sewn along the entire perimeter of the fabric strip on both sides, then the resulting part is connected to the side parts of the bag.

The most important thing to consider when making or purchasing this accessory is its dimensions relative to your bike. The bike bag should not be wider than the distance between the grips and should be positioned so as not to dangle and interfere with riding.

If there are several bags, it is important to distribute them evenly throughout the bike, also taking into account the weight of the bike and, in fact, the cyclist himself. Don't overload your transport with huge trunks! This can lead to undesirable, or even disastrous, consequences on the road.

The “pants” bike bag is thrown over the trunk on the rear wheel so that two pockets are on the sides of the rear wheel.
An indispensable item for cycling trips.

About the product

These dimensions are taken from an actually made bag. But they are advisory in nature. The patterns are designed for people who know how to sew. Various technological allowances are not taken into account - everyone must assign them themselves

Estimated manufacturing cost is $45

Very fashionable these days. So I decided not to lag behind. And I always wanted, but was afraid to make equipment myself. And just then the crisis is raging, the quiet winter evenings have arrived. So, I got a sewing machine, bought materials, and sat down to sew. I sewed for three days. Firstly, I do not have sewing skills, and secondly, having two children extends any activity indefinitely. In fact, I still can’t believe that I managed to finish this bag. :)

I tried really hard, messed up a little, and remade the seams more evenly. I gained valuable experience and a desire to sew more. And now I know what needs and can be improved, and how.

For those who want to make their own bicycle frame bag, but don’t know where to start, I recommend reading the following publications:

Or watch this helpful video:

I first cut out a pattern from cardboard to the size of the frame, and then I started thinking about what exactly I would like to get and how it would need to be sewn. I decided that I would make a two-section bag to have quick access to the necessary things. The presence of a partition will also prevent the bag from “swelling” too much and interfering with pedaling.

I decided to make the partition detachable with Velcro. This allows:
  1. make the bag mono-volume if necessary and cram in what you can’t fit in;
  2. adjust the width of the partition, respectively, the thickness of the bag within certain limits;
  3. add rigidity to the bag, since the Velcro is quite strong at the ends when stuck together;
  4. It’s easy to sew the bag around the perimeter with end fabric, and at the end turn it right side out through the zipper.

I decided to make the main power Velcro that provides fastening to the top tube of the frame extended to reduce the load on the zipper. For the same purpose, the zippers are not made from edge to edge.

I placed the remaining Velcro so that they do not interfere with the front derailleur, bottle cage mounts, etc.

For those curious, I rounded and sketched the dimensions.

It turned out very well, the perimeter is 1410 mm, thus the end strip of fabric fits into the width of the fabric cut, which is usually 1500 mm from edge to edge.

I decided to make the end strip 6 cm wide, which is approximately 2.5 inches. I made it in two layers, and for the second layer I used lighter fabric from the supplies I had at home. A two-layer end strip is needed to insert a strip of isolon into it, like into a sleeve, which will give rigidity to the entire structure and protect the frame pipes from impacts from hard objects that may end up in the bag.

The material for the bag was chosen by eye based on the consideration “to be rigid enough” :) Therefore, I bought a one-sided “Teza”: a woven synthetic base and a vinyl coating on one side.

The material, frankly, is not very good. But I found out this already in the process of work. Heavy, too stretchy, although quite tough. When tensioned, it is cut through by threads, so I made the critical seams (zippers, power Velcro) double. I attached the Velcro strips of the upper tube “shear”, the rest were simply sewn into the connecting seam, since the load on them is much less.

According to the Internet, the frost resistance of vinyl coating is only 15 °C. But I’m not going to ride touring in the winter yet.

For the future I will take Cordura 300d or some bourgeois laminated nylon hehe, if we ever have it.

About lightning. I stitched the top one in by cutting the side piece lengthwise. Additionally, I inserted pieces of fabric on the sides. I used a universal foot, which is why the seams are so crooked: (We need to study the hardware.

Having sewn in the top zipper, I realized that the workpiece had somehow shrunk a lot and the allowance had been reduced significantly. Therefore, I made the lower zipper simply by cutting out a slit with a soldering iron. I decided that this way I would also gain more experience :) And the water would flow past the lightning. A real benefit.

I covered the crooked seams with a reflective strip.

All zippers are made on the right, because when stopping on the road I will be further from the roadway.

It turned out quite well for the first time, but it was crooked in one place. Therefore, the bag twists a little.

On the other side.

All this beauty weighs 240 g. According to calculations (area of the trapezoid per thickness), the volume is about 7 liters.

Hi all! I have been actively using my bike for years and now I decided to “pump it up” a little. This review will be of interest to bicycle owners.

The first bike accessory I ordered was a bike frame bag. I’ll tell you about it.

I’ve been thinking for a long time about getting a frame bag so that while riding I won’t be bothered by keys, phones, wallets, and the like dangling in my pockets. In addition, it is wise to have a couple of wrenches, hexagons, a screwdriver and camera patches on hand when traveling. You can’t put such tools in your clothing pocket, and it’s not convenient to carry the same smartphone in a backpack. Because in order to use it, you need to stop, take off your backpack, take out your phone, etc.

The solution to this situation was a bicycle frame bag. I myself chose black - to match the color of the bicycle elements. Why did I choose this particular bag? – I liked the solution in the form of two wallets - one on each side of the frame. Convenient and practical.

The bag arrived in Ukraine with free delivery in 9 days (from dispatch to receipt, and it was still the May weekend). The packaging is a transparent bag from the manufacturer and an opaque bag from the store. That's all. Apparently they decided that because of its material it could not be damaged in any way. The product received corresponds to the order - I ordered a black bag (there is also a sand bag and a couple of khaki options).

It looks like two connected wallets; it has a total of 4 compartments, one of which is closed with a zipper, and all the others are closed with Velcro. Thanks to the Velcro compartment, I can quickly get what I need. He opened the top and took out the same smartphone. And if it was in a backpack, stop, take off the backpack, open it, take it out...

On one side of the bag, on the “lid” of the compartment, there is a large Velcro strip - the Chinese claim that they made it so that you could attach some kind of patch or emblem there to your taste. That is, we are also given the opportunity to make it individual for ourselves :-) (reminded of Android)

The bag also has a shoulder strap 130 cm long, which is equipped with two carabiners made of plastic and metal. When you leave your bike somewhere (but I don’t leave mine anywhere at all), you can quickly take it off and hang it on your shoulder or just take it in your hand.

The bag, according to my measurements (each of the two compartments) is 12 cm wide and 19-20 long.

The store itself describes it as follows:

Material: 600D Nylon+Mesh Cloth
Dimensions: 16x11x4.5 cm
Weight: 110 grams

As for the material, it is very dense and durable. Inside the walls between the two layers of nylon there are some soft inserts, I think it’s kind of like shock protection, softening. For example, the item in the bag does not knock on the frame. In practice, on occasion, I intend to test it during a trip in light rain to see if this material is really waterproof, as the seller claims.

In the meantime, this has not happened, I poured water on it from the tap - as a result, the water almost completely rolls off the bag, leaving a light stain, but only the edging material is really wet. Inside the bag, the top “lid” of one of the compartments, which does not have a protective insert, did not get wet. Well, I don’t plan to dive with her or go in the rain.

The quality of sewing - upon careful inspection, I discovered that no matter where you look, all the seams are made with high quality. Nothing is missing. No holes. But the Chinese were too lazy to clean it of thread and Velcro scraps, so I removed them myself, about 10 of them.

On my bicycle frame (shown in the photo), for which this bag was chosen, it is securely attached using two Velcro straps. The fixed bag did not dangle or slip.

While riding, I made sure that the fully stuffed bag did not touch my knees at all - I really liked this.

My attempts to fill it with different things showed that it would fit both the necessary tools such as various keys, a knife, and a smartphone, wallet, door keys, etc. Speaking of the wallet, my clutch fit into one of its compartments, but modern ones, much thicker than mine, most likely they won’t fit. There will be no problems with wallets of any other form.

Brief summary:

The bag looks high quality. The price of $10 is our 250 UAH. I have seen similar models of bags online in the range of 250-300 UAH ($10-12). Also on olx there are bags that are cheaper - for 70-130 UAH ($2.8-5.2) with slightly smaller measurements and without a strap. I don’t know what their quality is.

Is a bike bag worth 250 UAH? Probably everyone must decide for themselves. I went a couple of times to look at bicycle goods at Sportmaster, so all small Chinese plastic products there start from 150-200 UAH - for example, a plastic water bottle.

I was pleased with this purchase. I guess that's all I can say about her.

The life of the Tourist brand bicycle lasted 30 long years. It was the best Soviet bicycle for active recreation from KhVZ - Kharkov Bicycle Plant.

Now it is a retro showpiece and hangs on the wall of the barn, having lost its owner to a new young modern two-wheeled cross-country class friend.

The stylish multi-speed bicycle turned out to be completely naked - just an aluminum frame with wheels! I had to splurge on additional equipment - front and rear fenders, rear trunk, repair kit, spare camera, soft seat.

To give it my own cycling style, I made a “kangaroo” bag in the frame and a bag for a repair kit under the seat. Now my new bike has an original appearance and is ready for daily trips and travel.

The zipper is double stitched.

It is convenient to store a supply of water and food, a polyethylene raincoat and a pump in the “kangaroo”. The repair kit bag contains three tire mounts, a spare tube, glue with patches, a bandage, iodine and a towing rope.

A bicycle backpack or shopping bag can be easily installed on the rack with a spring clip. Wide plastic fenders protect the cyclist from dirt in rainy weather. On my first rides, I adjusted the seat and handlebars of the bike to suit my body position.

Light and fast running, effective disc brakes, a timeless frame and minor modifications - what else is needed for a real trip?

How to make a kangaroo bag for a bicycle with your own hands

1. Blanks for a bag made of material. It can be leatherette, so-called eco-leather or leatherette.

2. A template for a bag can be easily made from a piece of cardboard directly in place on the frame. Don't forget to mark the fastening straps or fasteners.

3.The material for the bag can be easily sewn together using a regular machine.

4. The wrong side of an already sewn bag. The zipper can be sewn on either side.

5.The thickness of the bag is set taking into account the diameter of the frame pipe. Don't forget to allow for allowances. The total width of the insert for my bag is 50 mm.

6.The zipper is double stitched.

7.The kangaroo bag is ready for installation. A stitched yellow decorative strip enlivens the black gloss of leatherette,

8. I don’t see any point in making the bag removable, so I just sewed it to the frame.
