How to make a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands. Types of garden wheelbarrows and a DIY scheme for creating a homemade two-wheeled wheelbarrow

The garden wheelbarrow and cart are known to anyone who has a summer house or any plot of land, who wants to build a house or any other structure. Also, these tools are necessary if you are going to transfer a significant amount of soil, fertilizer, building materials or other cargo.

If you have not yet bought a cart or wheelbarrow, but want to do so, then you need to understand everything in order to know the general concepts of what types of such tools there are. It is also important to know about all the advantages and disadvantages of them, and maybe consider the option of making a cart yourself. In this article we will try to give a detailed answer to the question - how to make a wheelbarrow with your own hands? Along the way, we will also try to answer the following question: what material to make a wheelbarrow from and what design it could be?

Homemade car

Make it yourself or buy it

The very first question that should be asked in our situation is whether it is worth “reinventing the wheel”? Is it better to buy a ready-made tool?

First, go to the first online construction store that will give you a Google search and look at the prices. Of course, buying at retail is more expensive than making it yourself, but not so much as to completely discard this option.

After comparing prices and assessing your own efforts that will be spent on making your own cart, you can come to a certain conclusion - your own cart will come out inexpensively if you don’t need to buy material for manufacturing, and you have everything on your farm, and you are asking the only question how to assemble it from what is there. Otherwise, the work will be unprofitable.

In the same store, the price of wheels ranges from 400 to 5000 rubles.

However, if you are a crafter at heart and get satisfaction from this kind of manual activity, then why not give it a try.

Types of wheelbarrows

Wheelbarrows may differ in the number of wheels. The most common option is a two-wheeled cart or a cart with one wheel. You can also make a wheelbarrow on 4 wheels. Each of them has its own pros and cons. For example, a wheelbarrow with one wheel is very convenient to use as a garden wheelbarrow or in the vegetable garden, because it is agile and will travel along any, even the thinnest path, thereby not touching any plantings. A cart with two wheels is not suitable for this type of work. But, for example, for construction work or for transporting something heavy over long distances, this is an ideal option. In turn, a unit with one wheel is not suitable for this, because it is unstable and requires enough energy to carry it in your hands. Transporting soil in wheelbarrows with two or four wheels is much easier. It would be ideal if you have two options for such carts.

As you probably noticed, a wheelbarrow is made for specific purposes and to work in specific conditions.

And one more argument in favor of having two options for wheelbarrows - for example, if you have a wheelbarrow for manure in the spring, then in the fall it is no longer suitable for harvesting.

It’s good to have more than one car at your dacha

How to approach the matter

Before you start making a cart with your own hands, develop drawings.

There are a huge number of examples of creativity, however, we recommend that you make sketches of the diagram yourself. This is because the available means from which the cart will be assembled are:

  • Metal pieces
  • Wheels
  • Cut pipes
  • Various accessories, etc.

DIY options

If at this stage you have not yet changed your mind about making a wheelbarrow yourself, then let's start studying this topic.

First, let's look at what frame and body designs can be.

Wheelbarrow made of profile pipe and galvanization

One of the options for the frame is to weld it from a square rod with a cross-section of 25 mm. You need to put two wheels on the axle. In turn, the axle is a pin mounted on nuts.

The body itself will consist from galvanized sheets. They need to be cut to the required sizes and screwed to the frame. As a result, we get a household item.

Wheelbarrow from scrap materials

In this picture, we see that the master did not try too hard to make the wheelbarrow aesthetically beautiful. He needed to make a tool for transporting earth, so that it would take a minimum of time and money.

In the picture we see the fruit of the craftsman’s labor

  • An unnecessary container was taken for mixing the solution, which later became the body
  • A frame was made from metal plumbing pipes. They were bent into an arc and welded together.
  • The axle for the wheel was also attached by welding. And the body was tightened with wire so that it would not fall out when turned over.

This is not the most ideal car option, but it will cope with its functions.

Metal wheelbarrow

In this picture we most likely see the result of the work of a perfectionist. Since the creator of this cart did not have a tool for bending pipes, a combination grinder was used to score the cart handles. The support legs were installed ready-made. The body is completely welded from scratch from a 3 mm thick sheet of iron.

If you look closely, you can notice something:

  1. The edges on the body are cut very evenly, it feels like it’s not even an angle grinder.
  2. Along the entire length of the body we see very high-quality welds.
  3. Pay attention to what color paint was chosen. This is an indication that the wheelbarrow was not made to carry earth or bricks in it, but for very clean work.

Here the owner did not try to make a car like at the factory: the bends are not as high quality, the quality of the seams is also not very neat. Although all this will not affect the performance of its functions.

But what if you don’t have a welding machine at hand, or have never used one? In this case, there is a lot of information on the Internet on how to make a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands, with only boards, screws, an axle and devices to attach it to the cart itself.

During assembly, it is preferable to use self-tapping screws made of galvanized material. Before you start tightening the screws, make holes in the boards, but make them smaller than the screws. This is done so that the board does not split when assembled with self-tapping screws.

Drawing of a wooden wheelbarrow

In this picture, we see another version of the car. A board bottom is not as practical as a galvanized sheet bottom. In this option, all that remains is to make the sides and put two wheels on the axle.

Another option for a garden wheelbarrow is to make it from barrels. Moreover, the material of the barrel is unimportant. It can be plastic, metal, or even wood, although you will probably have to struggle with it. The barrel is cut into two parts vertically, which means that two wheelbarrows can be made from it. The procedure for performing a “barrel” cart:

  1. Mode purchased barrel into two parts.
  2. We assemble the frame, the options for which you read above.
  3. We make the sides or ribs on which the barrel will rest.
  4. We install the wheels.

Wheelbarrow from an old barrel

As you can see, old things can sometimes come in handy, so think twice when you want to clean up your garage. Then you can wrap the holders with electrical tape to make it more comfortable for your hands. We can say that the car is ready. You can start making the “sister car”.

If you have an old bed, then we have another option for you. For this you will need: the bed itself and wheels. The wheels must be powerful. Wheels from an ancient Cossack are one of the options. The design of the trolley can be either on two wheels or on four. Assembly order:

  • Removing the bed net
  • We attach the wheels using welding or fasteners.
  • We fasten the bottom and sides from a thick steel layer.
  • We mount the handle - to your taste, but it is better to make it with the letter “p”, because it will be more ergonomic.

That's it, the creation is ready. It turns out to be a good homemade garden wheelbarrow for transporting goods. This is an indispensable tool for transporting hay, building materials, firewood and so on.

Wheel options

If you are thinking about not buying wheels for your homemade car, then we have several options for you.

  • You can use a baby stroller that is no longer useful anywhere. It would be better if it was a Soviet stroller, where the wheels are made of steel spokes. The result is a self-propelled car. One may get the impression that what was made in the USSR was designed for the purpose of being used after the child grows up. And the durability seems to border on that of a truck.
  • Bicycle wheels, no matter small or large. Of course, if the wheel is from a large bicycle, then you cannot install them one by one.

Fastening wheels (video)

Let's move on to consider the question of how to attach wheels if you do not have a welding machine.

A pin with a diameter of 16 to 20 mm can be used as an axle. It depends on which wheel. To secure the stud, you can also use nuts and clamp it on the sides.

If you use a wooden frame, some problems may arise. If the wheelbarrow is heavily loaded, the frame in the area where the axle is installed may break or crack. This problem can be solved by tightening the cut timber with iron plates.

Please note that the plates are not screwed down with screws, but are tightened with bolts, having first drilled a hole through. This design will not allow the beams to crack, provided, of course, that a reasonable load is applied to the axle.

The simplest car

This design is the leader in ease of manufacture. Its assembly will take you no more than a minute. It is enough to have a Soviet stroller and a trough.

conclusions

We believe that you found this article useful, and now you at least have a general idea of what homemade cars can be, and perhaps you have your own ideas. If you have not found a car that suits your needs, you have the option of buying a ready-made car.

It is quite possible to make a garden cart with your own hands. It will become an indispensable assistant for a summer resident who moves fertilizers, building materials, garbage and soil. If you have a wheelbarrow at hand, you will make your dacha life easier and save your strength. However, first it is important to familiarize yourself with how to make such a structure yourself.

Making a one-wheel trolley

Work on the manufacture of such a cart must begin with determining the dimensions of the future structure. The parameters will be determined by the volume of the container that will form the basis. Based on this, you should select a wheel and frame. Additional elements include levers, handles, ribs and a base. You will need racks, stops, slats and transverse ribs.

After this, you can prepare the tools, namely:

  • grinder;
  • drill;
  • metal saw;
  • screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • welding inverter.

Among the materials it is worth highlighting:

  • handset;
  • steel sheet;
  • corner for support posts;
  • nuts;
  • thin-walled tube;
  • cotter pins.

As for the steel sheet, its thickness should be 1 mm, while the area of the sheet will be 2 m2. A tube will be used as an axis; it can be replaced with fittings. Corners should be prepared for the support posts, but for the cargo posts and handles you will need a thin-walled tube, its diameter should be 20 mm.

Trolley assembly

If you make a 1-wheeled garden cart with your own hands, then you need to follow the technology. Markings should be made according to the sketch; at the next stage, you can cut out the blank for the body. The elements need to be assembled into a body using welding. Taking into account the parameters of the body, you need to assemble the chassis.

Overlays are attached to the base. The racks are fixed to the latter. Next, you can begin welding the ribs. The body is installed on the unit; it should be welded to the ribs. The remaining rib should be attached to the upper edge of the body and secured by welding. The levers should be welded to the lower as well as the upper rib and the wall of the body. Overlays are fixed on them.

If you are making a garden cart with your own hands, it is recommended that you first look at the photo. This will allow you to avoid mistakes and determine the design features of the product. At the next stage, the stop should be fixed to the body. To make the cart more rigid, it should be supplemented with ribs. Planks are fixed to the base, in which holes must first be made. An axle is inserted into the wheel, the first of which must be fixed. At this point we can assume that the assembly of the product is complete.

Making a two-wheeled trolley

If we compare a metal cart with a wooden one, the first one will be assembled from top to bottom. The dimensions of the container in this case will also determine the dimensions of the frame. It is important to check the tightness of the trough, then with the help of a cart you can transport even pasty or liquid loads without them leaking or staining the garden area.

Having made a 2-wheeled garden cart with your own hands, the next step is to start welding the frame. This is due to the fact that strength cannot be achieved using bolted connections. The handle should be welded to the frame, making it in the shape of the letter P.

The top bar should be smooth and parallel to the ground. For the trolley frame, you should choose pipe scraps or fittings, the latter of which will have a diameter of 12 mm or more. However, pipes are more preferable, because their welding provides higher strength. The reinforcement will act as reinforcing bridges.

Installing wheels and working on assembly

When you make a 2-wheeled garden cart with your own hands, at the next stage you can start attaching the wheels. They will have to be welded to the lower parts of the frame. This must be done separately. The body can be made with bolts; to do this, holes should be drilled in the container and frame where the bolts will then be installed. On the reverse side they must be tightened with nuts. Sealing washers must be placed between the plane of the container and the bolt heads.

You can use pneumatic wheels that are inflated by a pump. This will increase the load capacity to 80 kg. In addition, the vehicle's cross-country ability will increase. Another advantage of pneumatic wheels is that you can control the brakes on the handle. In this case, the cart can be moved even on inclined planes, the load will not fall apart and the cart will not tip over.

Making a wooden cart

Summer residents also make two-wheeled garden carts with their own hands quite often. This approach will be the easiest. Complex equipment such as a welding machine or cutting machine is not needed here. Wood can be processed according to the standard scheme. However, a wooden wheelbarrow will be inferior in terms of load capacity and durability to its metal counterpart.

It is based on a frame, which should be made of thick boards knocked together in the form of a rectangle or square. The bars must have a square cross-section with a side of 70 mm, otherwise only leaves or hay can be transported in a wheelbarrow. The frame of beams is assembled with an overlap; screws should be placed in the corners to strengthen the structure with metal corners. It can be supplemented with floors.

If the farm has antiseptic compounds, then the wood should be treated with them in advance, then the wheelbarrow will be able to withstand dampness and rotting. Rails for ball bearings should be attached to the bottom of the frame. Depending on the number of wheels, their number can be one or two.

Work methodology

A wooden cart is usually made with two wheels. If you have a ready-made axle on which you can install wheels, then a block with bearings will not be needed. The wheels are fixed to the cart skeleton. At this stage, you can correct flaws in the wheel fasteners. The handle of the structure will bear a large load. Therefore, it is advisable to make it from metal. A scooter handlebar or a long steel stick can be used as a metal handle. The mount must be hinged with a lock. This design will allow the fastener to be reliable and fold up for storage.

Four-wheeled cart made of barrel or metal

A 4-wheel garden cart with your own hands can be made from a sheet of metal. Its thickness can be equal to the limit of 2 mm. The body is assembled from the material, after which it is necessary to weld the chassis and handles to it. Depending on the load on the finished product, you can use wheels from a bicycle, moped or motorcycle.

When making a garden cart with your own hands, you can make it cheaper if you make the box from an old iron barrel. It is necessary to begin work with the manufacture of a supporting structure. For 4 wheels it should have the shape of a rectangle. To do this, you should use a lightweight metal profile, it can be a pipe or a square section product. Wheels are installed on the sides of the structure, while elements as handles should be installed at the desired angle. Half of the barrel must be installed on the frame. Pipes or arcs are welded from below. This is necessary to ensure the required load capacity.

Conclusion

If you decide to make a garden cart with your own hands, then the wheels for it can be purchased ready-made in the store. However, if you want to save extra money, you can use wheels from an old moped or motorcycle. It is better to choose pneumatic wheels, since with their help it will be possible to increase the load capacity of the wheelbarrow and increase its maneuverability on uneven surfaces.

It is noteworthy that a garden cart can be made with your own hands even from unnecessary things and like scraps of rolled metal and old metal beds. But in this case, the master should have the skills of a welder.

Nothing makes the work of a gardener or a builder at the dacha easier than a two-wheeled wheelbarrow. This primitive and prehistoric device is indispensable in everyday life, despite its simplicity. The cost of a tool in a supermarket can be very upsetting, and branded stores can even scare you. Why pay more if you can make a two-wheeled car with your own hands and save 5,000-7,000 rubles? Now we will look at detailed instructions for its manufacture and diagrams that will help us realize our “malicious plan”!

Selection of drawing and design features of a two-wheeled trolley

First, let's discard what will really be inconvenient and impractical. Carts and wooden structures are removed from the list. Why? Both of them are very heavy, why should we strain our backs or push something that is not being pushed? In addition, a body made of wood will fall apart within 2-3 years, or it must be constantly opened with varnish, dried after use and hidden from the rain. And since we value our time, we will only pay attention to metal homemade cars.

Now let's decide how many wheels are needed. Four and three wheels - we immediately discard them, since we need a light and maneuverable wheelbarrow, and not a cart for a tractor or motorcycle. Most gardeners prefer a single-wheel design, but it has a significant drawback - it can carry less weight, it is unstable, and is not suitable for uneven surfaces. It's easy to tip the load to the side. In general, one wheel for a wheelbarrow is good, but two are better. The general drawing of the frame and body of the car will be something like this:

Now let's decide on the cost. Although, why decide on it... If you don’t want to buy it in a store, it means you share our opinion and want to do everything cheap and cheerful. That's exactly what will happen. Our DIY garden wheelbarrow will cost no more than 750 rubles, provided that we buy the materials in a regular supermarket. If you have scrap metal lying around at your dacha, old metal profiles and at least 1 wheel for a wheelbarrow, then it will cost you almost free.

From words to deeds: how to make a homemade car in 4 hours

First we will make a frame on which the car body will be installed. Our the design is designed to transport no more than 200 kg, so take this into account and do not exceed the load to avoid tool breakage. Dimensions may vary, but we chose the average parameters that are most often used in gardening and construction two-wheeled wheelbarrows. Now let's move on to the selection of materials, tools and assembly of the structure.

STEP 1: weld the 2 load-bearing sides together. You will need 2 metal profiles with sides 35x35 mm and a length of 140-150 cm, as well as a corner 25x25 mm 2 meters long. We lay the metal profiles opposite on a flat surface, cut off 5 corners of 40 centimeters each and lay them out between our load-bearing sides of the frame. We weld the corners on both sides to the metal profile as shown in the diagram.

STEP 2: we make handles. We take a thick rubber hose with an internal diameter of 34 mm and a length of about 40 centimeters, cut it in half. A homemade garden wheelbarrow must have non-slip handles, so it is very difficult to pull the hose onto the metal profile. It must be held over the fire, constantly turning it, so that it warms up well. Then, with a slight movement of the hands (legs or improvised objects) or with the help of an assistant, we pull the hose onto the end of the frame, as shown in the diagram. The hose will cool down and it will no longer be possible to remove it. If it is difficult to tighten, you can lubricate the metal with shampoo, soap or grease- in most cases it helps.

STEP 3: We weld the axle. This can be done later, but we will do it now, because it is much more convenient. We turn our frame over for a homemade wheelbarrow and weld a metal rod with a diameter of 22 mm (this is the running size for tubeless wheels). You can choose a different diameter if you have some wheels in mind for a wheelbarrow. We recommend using tubeless cargo wheels with a diameter of 40 to 50 cm - they are practically eternal.

If your homemade wheelbarrow for a summer residence must transport a large load off-road (obstacles up to 5-8 cm in height), then it is better to use wheels with a larger diameter. If you have a very flat area or even concrete, it is better to choose 35-40 cm, no more - there is less resistance, it is more convenient to control and it is easier to push. Plus, smaller wheels are cheaper.

If you want to learn how to make a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands without significant costs, then you will need to select wheels from a moped or motorcycle. You can use an old walk-behind tractor with metal wheels or a seeder as a donor. Be sure to measure the inner diameter of the bushing and only then weld the corresponding axle to the metal frame that we welded first.

Do-it-yourself 2-wheeled garden wheelbarrow: manufacturing instructions

Now let's move on to the main part of our work - the body. As we agreed, we will make it to transport approximately 200 kg and somewhere in the same volume. Let’s take the height to be 40 centimeters (no more needed - it’s bad to turn over), length – 80 centimeters along the bottom edge of the body and 100 along the top. Width – 60-70 centimeters, to your taste. Actually, now let's move on to the assembly process.

STEP 1: We collect scrap metal. Steel thickness – 2 mm. It's enough. Of course, if your plans are to win Mr. Olympia, then you can make the body from 3-4 mm steel. You should have such spare parts as shown in the figure, then you can make a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands, the drawings of which were provided above.

STEP 2: We weld everything together. Actually, there’s nothing to explain here, just take any welding machine and weld this Rubik’s cube into a monolith.

STEP 3: We strengthen the structure with small corners. This point is relevant only if you used 1 mm thick steel to make a two-wheeled wheelbarrow with your own hands. The enhancements remove the “jellied” effect and the car becomes monolithic. With a steel thickness of 2 mm, you don’t have to worry about it - it will stand rooted to the spot.

STEP 4: We install the “box” on our frame. We weld it in several places to the metal profile, to the corners and voila - our do-it-yourself car is ready! All that remains now is to give it a tolerable appearance.

STEP 5: we paint. Do you have some old metal paint somewhere or dried residue from painting a gate or garage? We dilute and paint. Quality is not needed here - it will be erased anyway, this is just for the better appearance of our design, so that a photo of a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands can be uploaded to a social network to collect likes!

Now all that remains is to make one little thing - a folding leg, so that you can put the wheelbarrow in a horizontal position and conveniently load it. It will take no more than 30 minutes. We take a wheel from an old washing machine along with the mount, with a light movement of a hammer we remove the wheel from the mount (or unscrew it, depending on the design), and weld the mount to the bottom of the wheelbarrow. Next, you need to take a 20x20 mm metal profile, drill a 10 mm hole at the end, and insert an M10 bolt into the mount. Add a lock nut to prevent it from coming loose. You should end up with a car that looks like this:

The leg may require a stop (if you made poor calculations of the height and angle of the attachment). You can weld some piece of metal that will be in the place of the required stop, or take a pry bar and turn the leg mount in the desired direction. However, these are trifles and they are resolved in the process. Now you know how to make a car with your own hands without spending money and you can go to the garage to get all the necessary components. Also note that you can get good deals for pennies at a scrap metal collection point.

We invite you to watch a comparison of a purchased wheelbarrow and a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands in the video:

How to make a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands?

It is difficult for a summer resident who keeps order in his area to do without a garden wheelbarrow. It is indispensable when you need to clean up and remove waste from the site. With its help, you can move various loads, harvest crops and carry out other work. You can buy a garden wheelbarrow at any hardware store, but it’s much more interesting to make one yourself.

It is difficult for a summer resident who keeps order in his area to do without a garden wheelbarrow.

A garden cart should be reliable and comfortable. Most often it is used in the garden or vegetable garden, so it must be maneuverable so that it is easy to move along narrow paths and simply unload by slightly lifting the handles and turning the contents out.

Preparatory activities

In order to make a convenient cart for the garden, you do not need complex drawings and tools. To make it, you can use any materials, for example, wood.

Coniferous trees are not suitable for this purpose.

In order to assemble a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands, you need to prepare. To work you will need:

Wheelbarrow assembly diagram.

  1. Wooden boards and bars.
  2. Fasteners (screws, washers, nuts).
  3. Wood hacksaw or circular saw.
  4. Wrench.
  5. Pencil.
  6. Sandpaper.
  7. PVA glue.
  8. Metal stud with thread.
  9. Drill and drill bits for it.

Manufacturing of main parts

Work should begin with the manufacture of the box. To do this you will need pieces of boards. Their dimensions will depend on the dimensions of the future structure. The standard size of a wheelbarrow for a summer residence is 450 mm wide and 550 mm long. If necessary, dimensions can be changed.

Next you need to prepare the wheel. If there is no metal wheel on the farm, then it can be made from wood. To do this you will need 6 pieces of boards measuring 300x150x20 mm. Using PVA glue, they need to be glued into a square as follows: 2 planks are laid so that their long sides touch. The next 2 are placed on top so that the point of contact is perpendicular. The last planks are laid in the same way as the first. The resulting structure should be placed under a press and left until the glue dries completely. This will take at least 24 hours.

Next you need to mark the circle. The diameter of the future wheel will be 270-280 mm. For greater reliability, the wheel blank should be fastened using self-tapping screws or bolts. A circle is drilled according to the markings. Uneven edges of the workpiece should be sanded.

To attach the wheel and box, you will need a mounting frame - the main supporting part of the trolley. To assemble it you will need 2 bars 1200 mm long and at least 50 mm thick. The protruding parts of the bars will act as handles.

It is better to assemble parts on a flat surface. The bars should be placed side by side, connecting the ends on one side. The ends on the opposite side should be moved apart to a distance equal to the shoulder width of the person who will use the wheelbarrow.

At the ends of the bars connected together, you need to make a mark for future fastening of the wheel. To do this, timber of a smaller diameter is laid on them and a mark is placed on the frame. A cut is made from the intended line to the end of the frame.

Assembly of all parts

In order for a wooden cart to serve for many years and be strong and reliable, you should choose hardwood: oak, maple, elm, birch.

Before you put the wheel in place, you need to install a spacer between the frame bars. It is installed in such a way that the wheel fits between the pre-cut ends. If the wheel width is 60 mm, then a distance of 90 mm must be left between the bars. These parameters will help determine the size of the spacer itself. Its ends must be filed down and then attached to the beams using bolts.

To mount the wheel you will need a metal stud with a thread 200 mm long, 4 washers and 4 nuts with a diameter of at least 12-14 mm. At the end of the beams it is necessary to drill a hole for the pin. It is also necessary to prepare a hole in the middle of the wheel, the diameter of which should be slightly larger than that of the stud. When everything is ready, you can start assembling. The pin is threaded through a hole on one bar. A washer is put on it, then a nut, then a wheel is put on, then another nut and washer. After this, the pin is threaded through the hole on the second beam. On the outer sides of the beams, the wheel is secured with washers and nuts. The pin must be firmly fixed to the bars. To achieve this, you will need two wrenches.

When all the parts are ready, you can start assembling the car. The box is turned upside down, and a mounting frame with a wheel is placed on it. It must be installed so that the wheel does not touch the box. Using a pencil, mark the location of the frame on the bottom of the box so that you can install the wooden wedges as accurately as possible. Their thickness must be at least 50 mm, width - 100 mm. Along the marked lines, the wedges are attached to the bottom with bolts, and then the frame with the wheel is attached to them. To make the wheelbarrow convenient to use, spacers must be secured to the side walls of the box. Their length should be such that the box installed on them is parallel to the ground. Thanks to this, the country cart will stand level and stable during loading and unloading operations. To make the racks more rigid, they can be strengthened with a spacer, one end of which is attached to the rack, and the other to the bottom of the box.

The finished country cart should be covered with drying oil. This will protect the wood from damage and extend its service life. If, after many years of use, the cart is “retired”, do not rush to throw it away. It will serve as an excellent decoration for a summer cottage if you use it, for example, as a large flower pot.

Another trolley option

A country cart can be made of metal. The result will be a universal model that can be used for more difficult work, for example, during construction. To make it, you will need a welding machine and skills to work with it.

The trolley box can be made from a sheet of metal about 2 mm thick. The frame and handles should be welded to it. As for the wheel, you need to choose it based on the load that the finished equipment will experience.

The box can be of any size. In order to complete the work more accurately, it is advisable to draw up a diagram of the future product, on which all the details should be drawn and their dimensions indicated. According to the sketch, the sheet of metal is cut with a grinder and then welded into a box. To make racks, you can use a metal corner or pipe sections. In order not to make the structure heavier, it is better to make the handles from a thin-walled pipe.

To reduce the cost of work as much as possible, you can use an old metal barrel to make the box. First you need to build a supporting frame. To do this, you can use any material that is on the site: pipe, profile, square. Attach a wheel to the bow of the structure. The opposite ends will act as handles. The barrel should be cut lengthwise into two parts and one should be fixed to the frame. To ensure stability of the wheelbarrow, racks in the form of pipes or arcs must be welded under the supporting frame.

Every summer resident, gardener, and villager cannot do without a cart or wheelbarrow on their farm. In dacha farming, you often have to remove the garbage that has accumulated over the season. In the spring-autumn season there is the most cargo transportation; in the fall there are leaves and branches; in the spring, re-opening after winter, the garbage also comes from somewhere. In the village you always need a wheelbarrow because there is a lot of work.

Today, construction stores have a huge selection of garden wheelbarrows to suit every taste and budget. The designs of shopping carts are of course rather weak for our operating working conditions. Yes, even if the plot is large and you need a larger car. So the author thinks the same way and decided not to look for easy ways, but to make a garden wheelbarrow with his own hands. The brief principle of the cart’s operation is that the load placed in the body of the cart will put pressure on the wheel with its mass; by lifting the handles, they are also levers, we shift the weight onto the wheel and it becomes easier for us and the wheel takes on the entire mass of the load. This is shown in the picture.

But the author decided to make a two-wheeled cart, but the principle remains the same. So what does the author need to create his idea?

Materials: 30 mm boards, 16 mm pipe, two wheels, roofing iron, washers, nuts, bolts.

Tools: welding machine, drill, set of keys, hammer, hacksaw, axe. First, the diagram.
To begin with, the author sawed off a piece of pipe to size and welded the axles for the wheels.
Then I made a frame from wooden boards and blocks. The inside of the body was lined with iron.
I screwed the pipe with the wheels to the cart bridge with staples.
Next, I screwed the handle to the cart and essentially everything was ready.
Now the author has such a wonderful cart. Source Become the author of the site, publish your own articles, descriptions of homemade products and pay for the text. Read more here.

How to make a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands.

Keeping a garden plot in order is not easy. There will always be a pile of garbage, dry branches, construction debris, and constantly carrying heavy loads is hard. It is difficult and difficult for people who are in old age, and there are more and more such people who like to maintain a personal plot. In order not to carry heavy loads, but to spend time usefully at your summer cottage, you can make a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands.

A garden wheelbarrow made with your own hands from hand-made materials will become an indispensable assistant in the garden. You don’t need any special skills to build the device, and all the necessary materials can be taken from your dacha or bought at a hardware store.

Types of wheelbarrows

Depending on the work and the number of wheels, wheelbarrows are divided into several types. For construction work, metal wheelbarrows with one wheel are used. For work in the garden and vegetable garden, you can use wooden wheelbarrows, also with one wheel.

Devices for moving heavy loads with two or more wheels are called trolleys.

Varieties of garden wheelbarrows can be seen in the photo:

The main and most important advantage of the car is its reliability. Maneuverability also plays an important role. If a person uses a wheelbarrow in a vegetable garden or garden plot, a narrow path along which one can roll a one-wheeled wheelbarrow will be sufficient. It can also be easily unloaded and the contents turned over by slightly lifting the handle of the wheelbarrow.

Unfortunately, you can’t ride a two-wheeled car along a narrow path; there is a chance of damaging and crushing the plants.

To maintain balance and stability, it is necessary to build a wheelbarrow with spacers. And when you load it with a heavy load, make sure that it does not tip over and try to support it or support it on one side.

The main advantage of a two-wheeled wheelbarrow is its stability. And when such a device is loaded, there is no chance of capsizing.

A two-wheeled wheelbarrow is convenient for transporting building materials, long boards, and large branches. It is advisable to load them so that the center of gravity is in the middle of the body.

The design of the wheelbarrow can be different, with one handle or two. One cross handle is much more convenient, since you can hold on to it with one hand, and the other will be free.

Making a wheelbarrow from wood

Making a wooden wheelbarrow yourself is quite simple; you don’t need to complete the drawings of a garden wheelbarrow. You can do without them. If some material is missing, you can always purchase it at a hardware store.

For a garden wheelbarrow, it is preferable to take hardwood. The best options would be oak, birch, maple or elm. Such a car will last much longer, and the design will be strong and reliable. It is better not to use coniferous wood.

  1. Necessary materials:
  2. Wooden boards for the box.
  3. Wooden beams for the base.
  4. Boards for making a wheel.
  5. Screws, washers, nuts.
  6. Circular saw or hacksaw.
  7. Pencil or marker.
  8. Drill.
  9. PVA glue.
  10. Sandpaper.
  11. Metal rod with thread.
  12. Wrench.
  13. Welding machine.

How to make a mounting frame

  • Take the planks, plan them and assemble the base in the form of a box. The size of the car is at your discretion, based on your preferences for what you will transport. The standard size of a country cart is 45 centimeters wide and 55 centimeters long. You can add a centimeter in each value.

To build a cart you will also need a wheel. If you plan to build a one-wheeled garden wheelbarrow, then prepare one wheel. To create a two-wheeled garden wheelbarrow, you will need two wheels.

  • The finished box and wheel need to be strengthened on the base. To build the main supporting part of our wheelbarrow, you need to take two identical wooden blocks. The thickness of the timber should be about 3-5 centimeters, and the length should be a meter of 20 centimeters. The bars will automatically become our handles, the edges of which will be convenient to hold on to in order to move the load around the summer cottage.
  • To make it easier to assemble all parts of the cart, it is advisable to place the beams on a flat surface (this could be a table) and connect them together – end to end. And move the opposite ends to the side, the width should be the same as the width of the shoulders of the person who will use the wheelbarrow.
  • After laying out the beams on a flat surface, place a small diameter wooden beam on top. We outline its outlines using a pencil or marker so as to determine the parallel line on the frame. We mark the place where the wheel is mounted.
  • Where the lines are marked, you need to make a cut using a hacksaw or circular saw.

Making a wooden wheel

If it is not possible to purchase a metal wheel, you can make a wooden one yourself. For this, hardwood is taken (to avoid rotting). The diameter of the wheel will be 27-28 centimeters.

  • To assemble the wheel, you need to prepare the planks in advance and plan them. The size of the boards is 30x15x2 centimeters, the number is six pieces. They need to be glued together to form a square. You can glue with regular PVA glue. After gluing, the structure must be placed under a press for 24 hours.
  • After gluing the square, use a pencil or marker to mark the circle. Before you start drilling the wheel, using bolts, it is advisable to fasten the structure. Drill according to the mark, treat the surface with sandpaper or a rasp.

If the wheelbarrow will be actively used to move heavy objects, then it is better to buy a metal wheel. In principle, the installation of both a wooden wheel and a finished metal one with a rubber tire is no different.

How to mount the wheel and frame

  1. To attach the wheel to the wheelbarrow, you need to connect the bars using a spacer. It is installed so that the wheel can be inserted. If the wheel width is about 5-6 centimeters, then the distance should be 8-9 centimeters. Therefore, the spacer can be prepared in advance, sawed down, especially at the ends, and attached with bolts to the beams.
  2. To mount the wheel, you can use a long metal rod (pin) that has a thread (thread length up to 200 mm. You also need to prepare four washers and nuts with a diameter of up to 14 mm.
  3. It is necessary to make a hole for the rod at the end of the beams. And drill a hole in the middle of the wheel larger than the diameter of the stud. Next, we assemble and secure the wheel with a washer and nut. The stud should be well secured; you can check this with a wrench. If it is loose, tighten it with two keys.

If you are assembling a wheelbarrow from metal, its body must be welded to the frame using a welding machine.

Assembly

  • Turn the wheelbarrow box over and place the base with the wheel installed on top, but so that the wheel does not reach the box itself. Using a marker or pencil, mark where the frame lies. This is necessary for cutting wooden wedges. Their thickness should be about 5 centimeters, twice as wide. They need to be attached along the marked lines to the box with bolts and the base with the wheel must be attached with wedges.

  • The finished wheelbarrow must be coated with drying oil. This way the tree will last much longer and will be protected from rotting.

  • In order for the garden wheelbarrow to be used accurately, it must be installed on spacers.

After the wheelbarrow breaks down (in a few decades), it can be used as a flower bed.

Assembling a metal wheelbarrow

We assemble a garden wheelbarrow from metal. This design will be much more durable and will last for many years. It can be used both during harvesting and during construction to move sand and cement.

It’s not difficult to make a metal wheelbarrow with your own hands. All that is needed is the presence of a welding machine and the skills to operate it.

For example, a garden wheelbarrow can be welded from sheet metal 1-2 mm thick. First, you need to assemble a body from a sheet and then attach a wheel and handle to it. If a large load is expected on the wheelbarrow, it is advisable to install a powerful wheel, for example, from an old moped, bicycle or even motorcycle.

  • Let's start making the car. We take a sheet of steel one meter by two, 1 mm thick. You need to purchase wheels in advance with a diameter of up to 40 cm; choose ones that already have bearings installed.

The box can be made of any size, with a capacity of about 100 liters.

  • To complete the work accurately, you need to draw a sketch, apply dimensions, and indicate all the details.

  • For work you will need a welding machine and a grinder. The sheet needs to be “cut” according to the sketch and the box welded. Make support posts from a metal corner measuring 25x25; instead of a corner, you can take a piece of metal pipe of the required diameter. The handle for the wheelbarrow can be made from a pipe with thin walls so that the wheelbarrow itself is not too heavy. If desired, you can make a wheelbarrow with two handles.

It is impossible to live in a private home without a wheelbarrow. It is used to move goods around the site: bricks and other building materials, firewood, coal, leaves, etc. The trolley has a simple design, which differs in the number of wheels and material of manufacture. The choice of option depends on the intended use of the transport device. In the article below we will tell you how to make a wheelbarrow with your own hands and what to pay attention to during the task.

Making a wheelbarrow on your own or purchasing a finished product is the first question that needs to be dealt with. Numerous online stores and an assortment of construction hypermarkets will help you estimate the cost of a factory trolley. Cheap models are often made from low-quality materials, so they will not be able to withstand heavy loads, and will also require special care (for example, moving them to a heated room for the winter to prevent rust).

You should compare the cost of the finished product and the materials that will be needed for self-production. Significant savings will be achieved if most of the necessary components of the house are available: sheet metal, angles or profile pipes, wheels, etc. It is also necessary to understand that the most durable structure is obtained by welding, and for this you will need a welding machine.

If the farm has the necessary tools and materials, then making a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands is quite possible.

Number of wheels

Next, you will need to decide on the number of wheels in the structure. One-wheeled cars are incredibly maneuverable; they can easily navigate a narrow path two bricks wide. At the same time, garden crops growing around the edges will not be caught. At the same time, one wheel will not allow moving large loads due to insufficient stability.

Two-wheeled carts are the best option, suitable for transporting both autumn foliage and bags of cement. Less effort is spent on driving such cars.

There are three and four wheeled models, but they are less popular due to their low maneuverability. Although they are much easier to transport heavy loads. It is ideal to have two options for wheelbarrows on the site for different tasks.

Material selection

When making it yourself, available materials are often used, and there is no question of choice. However, in case of purchasing the necessary components, the following options are available:

The choice of manufacturing material depends on financial capabilities, but it is highly not recommended to give preference to wood, due to its fragility.

Main design elements

In general terms, the design of various models of trolleys does not differ significantly and consists of the following main parts:

Before performing the task and during production, the following recommendations should be considered:

Step-by-step instruction

In this section we will describe in detail how to make a garden wheelbarrow with your own hands, provide drawings and photos of finished options.

Instructions for creating a two-wheeled wheelbarrow with a frame made of metal corners and a profile pipe:

Now you know how to make your own garden wheelbarrow. You should use one of the proposed drawings and transfer your dimensions to it, the rest is a matter of technique. Completing the plan will take no more than one day of work, if you do not take into account the time for painting and drying.
