Coffee trees with their own hands. DIY coffee topiary: step by step instructions

If you like to surprise and delight your friends with non-standard gifts, this type of craft is like a coffee topiary, you will definitely like it. After all, all that is required to create it is simple fixtures and materials, accuracy and patience. Well, a drop of inspiration, of course!

What is a topiary, or how far does a coffee bean tree go?

Topiary is a man-made ornamental tree. Now it is made from various natural materials and improvised means. This art originated in ancient Rome. The first topiaries were skillfully pruned trees in the gardens of the Roman patricians. Gardeners gave bizarre shapes to the crowns of plants, thereby creating a semblance of statues and other decorative items.

Topiary went through many changes in its development: the modest and painstaking work of nuns in medieval monasteries, decorative Renaissance trees created on a grand scale, gardens and labyrinths of Holland and England of the 17th century, etc.

Today, the topiary is an incredibly popular souvenir. The tree of coffee beans, in addition to visual pleasure, brings olfactory pleasure. After all, even after processing, the grains continue to smell, filling the room with a wonderful aroma and creating a cozy atmosphere.

Materials and tools

The main material in the manufacture of coffee trees is, of course, coffee beans. You will also need:

  • ball or heart for the base;
  • paints, glue, paper, tapes;
  • container in which the tree will "grow";
  • wire;
  • gypsum, putty or other container fillers, etc.

The exact list is compiled when choosing a product option and will be presented by us below, in a step-by-step instruction.

By becoming familiar with existing techniques, you can create your own recipe using the items you have on hand.

Gift with meaning

Before you make a coffee tree, think about what meaning you want to put into this gift. Topiaries are a symbol of prosperity and unquenchable vitality (like a tree, in principle), happiness and well-being. By adding some elements, you can correct the message enclosed in the craft.

Idea! So, if the topiary is intended for newlyweds, there can be two crowns (or small baby trees will be located next to two large ones).

It is customary to give gifts in the shape of a heart to a loved one. When creating a souvenir for a woman, you can add a lot of small jewelry, ribbons and lace. The topiary addressed to a man should presumably have a strong base, as if emphasizing the reliability of the stronger sex. Based on your knowledge of a person, you can create a unique, special gift.

A coffee tree is a cute gift for Valentine's Day, International Women's Day, or just a romantic gift for a loved one.

Topiary has become a popular interior element. It is made from different materials. One of them is coffee.

Do-it-yourself coffee topiary. Step by step

It will help to make a coffee topiary master class with a detailed description of the steps.

Glue on the blank for the crown coffee beans, placing them with the central strip down.

The ball is covered completely. Then the next layer is glued, placing the grains with a strip up.

Used for stem a tube. Three centimeters should be retreated from its edge and double-sided tape should be glued in a spiral. On the other side, three centimeters of the tube are also left unglued.

Wrapping on tape satin ribbon desired color.

Take a container and pour water into it. Add to water alabaster until you get a mass that looks like rather thick sour cream.

We shift this mass into a cache-pot and insert the trunk into it.

The alabaster needs to harden so that its surface becomes dry.

The surface of the alabaster in the pot is also pasted over with grains in two layers, like a ball.

Squeeze glue on top of the tube and glue the crown.

Decorate the resulting coffee topiary with a ribbon.

The basis for the crown can be christmas ball, and with a barrel - a wooden skewer for barbecue.

Coffee beans are glued to the ball, decorate skewer.

Can be used as a container for installation jar from under the cream. We wrap it in burlap, which we tie with a rope around the neck.

Gypsum is poured inside, fixing the tree. The surface of the plaster is hidden by a cardboard circle filled with instant coffee.

Topiary coffee. Step by step guide with photo

The manufacture of such a coffee topiary in a master class is described. Let us consider in detail the manufacturing process of such an interesting decorative composition.

take wire twenty centimeters long, recede from the end by seven centimeters and turn this part into a ring. Four centimeters are measured from the other end of the wire and bent at this point.

The saucer is degreased with alcohol. The wire with the side with the ring is glued to the degreased surface with instant glue.

inner surface cups also wipe with alcohol and glue it to the other side of the wire. First find a support that will support the cup while the glue sets. The curing process can take several days.

When the foam hardens, cut off the excess amount. Removing foam. take into account the thickness that the coffee beans will give. It is necessary to make the stream look harmonious.

To form a volumetric mounting jet, you can use mass for molding or masking tape. It is convenient to wind the wire frame last.

After the excess foam is removed, the surface stain. If this is not done, then a white base will appear between the coffee beans.

A step-by-step master class on creating a coffee topiary ends gluing grains to the surface of the foam. It is better to glue them with transparent glue, which sets in a couple of minutes. This will allow you to adjust the location of the grains.

coffee heart

You can make a coffee topiary with your own hands in a variety of shapes. One option is the heart.

To make it, draw a heart on paper, cut it out and trace it on cardboard. We need to make two cardboard hearts.

Two wire the required length is wrapped with paper and glued to the heart.

Glue on a cardboard surface cotton pads, and close the top with a second cardboard heart. This will create volume.

Outside, the resulting heart also needs to be pasted over with cotton pads. To give the necessary shape, it is wrapped threads.

The resulting basis coloring brown paint. Then glue coffee beans on its surface.

Glue to the iron can in a circle sticks from ice cream.

wire. Glued to the heart we wrap with jute thread.

We fix the sponge in the resulting pot, and put the stem of the topiary from coffee in the form of a heart into it.

We decorate the surface of the pot and the topiary itself.

Variants of coffee hearts

A rather discreet topiary, which is decorated with only small elements. As a decoration, a cinnamon star is used, which goes well with coffee, a harsh rope, and two thin ribbons that match perfectly in color.

Very interesting coffee tree with a crown in the shape of a heart. The grains are arranged in even rows, which gives the composition a special effect. There is no need for bright decorations. One modest bow is enough.

Coffee tree with a regular crown. Unusualness gives it a special decor. This is a bright bow with hearts and an absolutely straight trunk wrapped with a rope.

Tenderness to this coffee tree gives the decor and shape of the trunk. The slightly curved trunk looks elegant. White and pale green details perfectly set off the other colors of this composition.

Bright and elegant coffee heart, decorated with red roses with shiny petals. The decor is emphasized by a double bow with the same color combination.

Coffee topiary with several crowns

To create such an unusual do-it-yourself coffee topiary, you will need six foam balls. They need to be wrapped with threads, the ends of which are fixed with glue. Coffee beans are glued on top, flat side down. When pasting, leave a small space for attaching the support.

Double aluminum wire divide into several parts to form a branched crown. The end of one wire is divided into two parts so that the structure becomes stable.

We bend the trunk, and fix additional branches with masking tape. Then we split all the upper ends into two parts, bend the branches.

To give aesthetics to the trunk, we first wrap it with masking tape. This will create a thickening at the bottom, like a real tree. Coarse tape is wound over the masking tape twine.

At the ends of the branches, smeared with glue, we put on balls of coffee. A tree is installed in the selected pot and the base is poured with plaster. The plaster surface is also decorated with coffee beans after drying. You can stick another layer of coffee on the crown.

Coffee Topiary: video

The process is most clearly explained by the video of a master class on creating a coffee topiary. For the crown, a foam ball is taken, which is wrapped with paper and threads. On one side, a hole is made in it for the barrel. Coffee beans are glued onto the surface with transparent glue. The details of the trunk are fixed in the pot with the help of a plaster composition. A ball is put on this trunk, which is pasted over with grains. Next, the surface of the gypsum in the pot is decorated. To do this, it is also covered with coffee beans. At the end, the finished topiary is decorated. To do this, you can take various ribbons and other decorative elements.

Video: heart-shaped coffee topiary

This step-by-step coffee topiary tutorial shows how you can decorate a fairly ordinary topiary container in a fun way. A transparent glass cup is taken as such a container. Pigtails woven from a simple, coarse rope are glued onto it. The result is a textured detail, combined with smooth glass. Liquid gypsum is placed inside the cup, in which the topiary is installed. After the gypsum has hardened, the edges of the cup are decorated with coffee beans, and white pebbles are laid on the surface. As a result, the heart-shaped topiary looks more harmonious, thanks to an interestingly decorated base.

Topiary coffee magnet

Let's make a coffee topiary magnet. A step-by-step master class will help with this.

To make such a topiary, we do blanks from cardboard. To do this, draw a round crown and a pot, and then cut them out.

We collect a tree using a wooden wand from ice cream. We insert it between two pieces of cardboard and glue it.

Pasting over burlap cardboard pieces on both sides.

Glue on the back side magnets.

Glue coffee beans on the front side. The first row along the edge we glue the grains with the flat side down, and the second row with the flat side up. Fill the center with grains, and then glue the second row.

We decorate the finished topiary.

The basis for a topiary from a branch

To make the basis in a step-by-step master class on creating a coffee topiary, it is not at all necessary to take special components. Branch and old newspapers can be used.

From newspapers ball is made. Branch lubricated with glue and placed in it. Newspapers should be pressed closer to her.

The surface of the ball is smeared glue and wrapped threads. The next layer of newspapers is wound around it, which is also wrapped with threads and smeared with glue. The procedure is repeated until the desired size is obtained.

The finished crown on the trunk is installed in a container with gypsum filling. Gypsum it is necessary to dilute to the consistency of sour cream and pour into the desired container. A trunk is installed there and kept as evenly as possible until the gypsum solidifies.

Glue together with a glue gun several foam plates with even surfaces.

Cut a cube out of them, the size of which should be 5 cm larger than planned.

With a clerical knife, first cut off the sharp edges, then give the workpiece the shape of a ball.

To make the ball even smoother, you can rub it with your hands.

Now the blanks can be decorated.

In more detail, a master class on making a ball for a coffee tree with your own hands can be viewed on the video:

Advice! You can make a blank from newspapers, for this they need to be twisted into a tight lump and tied with twine.

Rod decoration

The next step is to prepare the rod-holder of the coffee tree. For it, we will take an ordinary stick and a rope. Next, you need to fix the twine at the base of the rod and wrap it tightly in a spiral, leaving no gaps.

How to make a tree crown from coffee beans

Previously, the blank must be painted with paint or black so that the background does not shine through the grains. Let's start decorating the crown.

Illustration Action Description

Cut a small hole in the foam base, apply glue to the barrel and fix it in the workpiece.

Apply some glue to the ball and stick the grains. They can be fixed in halves up, down or alternated with each other. The glue hardens very quickly, so you should coat a small area for several elements.

The base of the ball must be completely glued with coffee beans.

How to fill a pot and secure a tree

To decorate the base, we will take an ordinary pot for and a square piece of burlap, which we will fix with glue.

Illustration Action Description

Lay the pot on the burlap diagonally, wrap it around the surface and glue the ends with a glue gun.

Cut off the excess corner of the burlap and loosen the edges a little for a more natural look. Then glue the burlap at the sides.

Close the bottom of the pot with a circle of.

Dilute with water to a state of thick sour cream.

Fill the pot with the mixture and level the composition.

Put the tree in the center of the pot and hold it in this position for a while so that the composition has time to grab. The gypsum will completely harden only after 10 hours.

After the mixture has completely dried, sprinkle the base of the pot with coffee beans, sesal, burlap are also suitable.

We decorate crafts

As a decoration in our master class, only coffee beans, ribbons of two colors and a bead were used.

10 ideas

Idea. 1. Classic topiary

The classic coffee topiary is round, without any special embellishments, made only from natural materials and in neutral colors. Such a tree looks simple, but perhaps more elegant than others. At the end of the article you will find a step-by-step master class on making just this type of topiary.

Idea 2. Flower tree

A coffee tree with flowers blooming on it is a great idea for a women's gift, for example, on March 8 or, say, Teacher's Day. It also looks great in a bedroom or living room.

Idea 3. Fruit tree

If you decorate a coffee topiary with dried citrus slices or decorative mini-fruits, you get an accessory for summer serving. However, even in the cold season, it will be appropriate in the interior of the kitchen or dining room.

By the way, the coffee ball itself can turn into a delicious fruit, as in the photo below.

Idea 4. Tree with butterflies and birds

Another idea for a spring-summer coffee topiary is a tree with butterflies, dragonflies or birds sitting on it.

Idea 5. Christmas tree

A coffee tree in the form of a Christmas tree is a wonderful decoration for a festive table or New Year's decoration at home. You can buy a blank or make it yourself by rolling thick paper into a cone and cutting off the excess.

Idea 6. Topiary "Money tree"

A coffee money tree can be a great gift for men. It is done in the same way as an ordinary topiary, the only difference is that first coins are glued to the ball, then they are bent around with an open zipper, and only then the ball is covered with coffee beans.

Idea 7. Coffee Valentine

A heart-shaped topiary is a great gift for Valentine's Day and more. You can buy a ready-made heart base in a florist's shop or make it yourself from improvised materials.

How to make a heart-shaped coffee topiary with your own hands can be found in the following video.

Idea 8. "Floating cup"

Such a topiary is often called a "spill cup" or "flying cup". Despite the apparent complexity, it is done very simply. For the manufacture of the base of the spill cup, wire and hot glue or polyurethane foam are used. After watching the following video instruction, you will learn and clearly see how to make such a topiary with your own hands.

Idea 9. Double or triple topiary

Double and triple topiaries require more effort, but the result is more impressive. Crowns can branch out from one trunk or immediately "grow" from three trunks of different heights and thicknesses.

Idea 10. Decorative balls

Strictly speaking, such an ornament cannot be called a topiary, because it does not have a trunk and does not look like a tree at all. And yet, it looks no less beautiful, especially in combination with balls of beans, lentils and pumpkin seeds. The arrangement of balls looks beautiful on a large dish or in a glass transparent vase, and you can decorate with it not only a dining table, but also a coffee table, a console in the hallway or a shelving unit in the living room. In the following photo slider, you can get ideas for combining bean balls and coffee beans.

Master class for beginners

Most types of topiary are made according to the same principle. Having mastered our basic instructions, you can create a topiary to your taste.

Materials and tools:

  1. To create a crown:
  • Coffee beans of one variety or several (200-300 g depending on the size of the ball).
  • Base ball made of foam (sold in craft stores), floral foam (available at a florist shop) or plastic (ball for a children's dry pool) with a diameter of about 8-12 cm. If desired, instead of a ball, you can use a blank in the form of a heart or any other shape.
  • Decor (optional): cinnamon sticks, dried citrus slices, carnation stars, artificial flowers, satin ribbons, beads, etc.
  • Brown acrylic paint or a piece of brown cloth to wrap around the balloon.
  1. For stem:
  • Branch, pencil or stick. You can determine the desired length using a simple formula: the height of the pot + 1/3 of the diameter of the ball + the desired distance from the base to the crown.
  • Decor (if necessary): paint, twine, satin ribbon or other materials that can wrap or paint the trunk.
  1. For the base:
  • Pot, cup or any other pretty container;
  • Mounting mixture: cement, plaster or alabaster. We recommend using alabaster, as it is easy to breed, affordable, and most importantly, it dries quickly and does not crack.
  • Materials for decoration and filling the pot. It can be the same coffee beans, small pebbles, and even better - dry moss.
  1. Auxiliary tools and materials:
  • Hot glue gun and about three sticks of glue or transparent titanium mounting adhesive.
  • Scissors.
  • Tassel.

Instruction:

Step 1. First you need to do the preparation of the ball. Paint it brown and leave to dry. At this stage, you can also paint the trunk and/or the pot.

Step 2. While the paint dries, start sorting the grains. This step is optional, but desirable if you want the crown to be neat and even. First, remove the broken and cracked grains. Divide the rest into 4 groups:

  • Beautiful grains of the same size - they will be on the most visible part of the topiary, that is, on its top.
  • Round - it is better not to use them for finishing the crown, since on the ball they will be higher than the main mass. If desired, they can be used to decorate the pot.
  • Whole, but not very beautiful - they are best used to finish the lower part of the crown.
  • Small - they are good for closing small gaps between the grains.

Step 3 Now that the ball is completely dry, you can cut a hole in it for the barrel. To do this, first attach the barrel to the ball and circle its outline, then cut a hole in it 2-3 cm deep.

Step 4. We proceed to the design of the crown. You can use one of two techniques:

  • Technique 1. Grains are glued individually and most often according to the honeycomb principle. You can also glue them with a groove up and / or down, vertically, horizontally or on edge, alternate light and dark beans, insert small / large grains or halves into the gaps if necessary. Do not forget that the most beautiful grains need to be glued on the top half of the ball. Below is a selection of photos of coffee topiaries, the grains of which are stacked in different ways (swipe!).

  • Technique 2. To apply this technique, it is better to use not hot glue, but Titanium mounting transparent glue. Directly from the tube, squeeze a little glue onto the ball and let it spread over a small area (eg, 5x5 cm). Then we sprinkle this sector with a handful of grains and begin to distribute and align the grains over the ball with our fingers. To prevent excess coffee from falling on the floor, place a container under your arms. Glue "Titan", unlike hot glue, will allow you to move and compact the grains on the ball without fear of getting burned. And, besides, it gives more time for correction. Therefore, using it, you can not stick the grains one by one, but sprinkle the ball with whole handfuls of coffee, which greatly speeds up the process. True, the grains in this case will be stacked randomly, and not in a certain order.

Whatever technique you choose, when the ball is almost completely covered in grains, leave a small area around the hole unshaped. We will finalize it later, when the trunk is installed.

Step 5. If you want to not just paint the trunk, but decorate it with twine or satin ribbon, then now is the time to do it.

  • To wrap the barrel with a satin ribbon, you must first wrap it in double-sided tape, not reaching the edges of about 3 cm.
  • The twine can also be fixed with double-sided tape or hot glue/Titan glue.

Step 6. Insert the barrel into the ball and fix it with hot glue. Keep in mind that the glue quickly melts the foam, so in order for the hole not to deepen too much, insert small pieces of paper into the hole along with the glue. Remember that the barrel should go into the ball about 1/3 of its diameter.

Step 7. Now you can glue the grains in the area around the trunk. If desired, in order for the crown of the coffee tree to have no gaps at all, you can glue a second layer of grains onto the ball. Often a two-layer crown is covered first with grains with grooves down (poor quality grains can be used), and then with grooves up.

Step 8. Hooray, the coffee topiary is almost ready! It remains only to "plant" the tree in a pot. To do this, first make sure that the pot does not have a drainage hole. If there is a hole, fill it with hot glue. Next, dilute the cement or alabaster and immediately fill the container with the mixture, not reaching the edges by 2-3 cm. Insert the tree into the center of the pot and hold for several minutes until the mixture hardens. Then leave the topiary for 12-24 hours, that is, until the "soil" is dry.

  • As already noted, a mixture of alabaster is best suited for making topiary with your own hands. It is diluted as follows: water is poured into the pot, not reaching 2-3 cm to the edge, then the water is poured into a bowl, then alabaster is gradually poured into the water. The mixture must be continuously stirred until the consistency of thick sour cream is obtained.

Step 9. When the base of the topiary is dry, start decorating it. Alabaster can be decorated with the same coffee as in our master class, covered with dry moss, sisal, filled with pebbles, glass pebbles or beans. And finally, add the final touch - a satin ribbon bow.

We also offer you to watch a video tutorial on making a topiary from a plastic ball for a dry pool.

Topiary is a universal gift for a birthday, New Year, housewarming - any other celebration for a man, woman, child, decoration of the decor of any interior. We are not talking about trees and shrubs that are regularly trimmed to give shape. Ancient gardeners took evergreens with a dense crown as a basis. Through purposeful care, they were turned into balls, columns, arbors. In Russia, artistic cutting of plants was introduced by Peter the Great, but it was available only to a few rich and noble.

Today, beautifully manicured gardens with geometric designs are experiencing a rebirth. Topiaries do not leave anyone indifferent, but not everyone has the opportunity to grow such gardens at home, and people have transferred the art of creating a topiary to the house, growing tiny trees for interior decoration. Now you don’t even need to grow it - it’s very fashionable to decorate a house with artificially created trees. What is not used in their creation: natural material, products, feathers, shells, pebbles, cocktail umbrellas, beads, ribbons, flowers, buttons .... But the most popular material for making a tree of happiness is coffee beans. And the do-it-yourself topiary looks interesting from coffee beans, and it exudes a lively, invigorating aroma.

If cutting a living topiary requires special skill, then everyone can “grow” our tree of happiness. You can buy a decorative tree in the most luxurious design - from amethyst, citrine, crystal or coral - in a store, but how can you buy happiness? It is in our hands!

What is the tree of happiness

Even a beginner is able to master this art: it is easy to work with coffee beans - they do not crumple, do not break, and special materials are not required for such a tree, they are all affordable and always on sale. First of all, you need to prepare

Topiary from coffee beans

Tools and materials

  • 100 g coffee beans evenly roasted;
  • children's cup - non-spill (can be bought at stationery);
  • natural whitewash brush (available on the market and in hardware stores);
  • a plastic ball measuring 8 - 10 cm (from a toy store);
  • brown threads;
  • scissors;
  • two rubber bands for money;
  • transparent glue universal;
  • a glass of sand;
  • gypsum or cement;
  • stick or branch about 20 cm long and up to 2 cm thick;
  • twine (50 cm).

Step-by-step instruction

We begin to create a topiary from coffee with our own hands from the crown of a tree, for which we carefully cut a hole along the diameter of the trunk in a plastic ball with scissors.

If the ball is bright, contrasting in color, it is worth painting it with acrylic paints to match the coffee beans - it will be easier to mask voids. We disassemble the whitewash brush by cutting the ropes and disassembling the washcloth into strands. At one end of the future trunk, we fix the end of the thread with an elastic band - a bast. We coat the stick with universal glue and tightly lay the turns in a spiral. At the end we put on an elastic band again.

We insert the barrel into the ball until it stops. For reliability, you can fill the free space with napkins and add a little glue. It is easier to glue the grains not on a plastic base, but on a mesh of threads. Therefore, we first wrap the ball with brown threads and fix it with glue. You can also use strands from a whitewash brush for this purpose.

A do-it-yourself topiary master class from coffee will be incomplete without a description of some details, in particular the preparation of coffee beans. We open the package and sort the grains by size and quality: round shapeless ones will go to the base in a pot or in a coffee grinder for decoration; pieces, with defects - immediately into the coffee grinder; not quite even, but strong - on the first layer of the crown; fill the voids with small integers; pointed - at the joints; smooth, large and beautiful - on the top layer.

Ball wrapping. We prepare transparent superglue, a brush and grains for the first layer. For a better relief, it is desirable to glue them alternately on the opposite side. We apply glue to each grain quickly and accurately (leaves indelible stains on coffee, quickly sticks to hands). Work in a ventilated area. So that the smell of glue does not block the aroma of coffee. You can work with a thermal gun or liquid nails.

One layer of coffee is not enough, after drying we cover the topiary with a second layer of the largest grains, not forgetting to alternate the grooves and the smooth side. In order for the glue not to leave glare, it is necessary to work especially carefully.

We decorate the pot

  1. Now let's take an exclusive pot. We begin to glue the bottom. Why lay out a layer of strands from the brush in size slightly larger than the bottom area, apply glue to the bottom of the pot and glue the bast. We cut off the protruding parts.
  2. We decorate the pot itself. We cut the strands 3 cm longer than the height of the pot. Apply glue to the glass. Not reaching the top 2-3 cm, we glue the bast with even dense strands.
  3. After gluing, we tighten the bottom of the pot with twine. We trim the edge so that it is 2 cm above the level of the glass.
  4. We glue the funnel with strands from the brush and insert the trunk of the tree into it.
  5. We fill the container with gypsum, sand or alabaster.
  6. Insert the funnel into the glass. We tie the upper part with twine, cut the ends.
  7. The crown can be covered with a protective layer of transparent varnish or paint, but many masters skip this stage, because such processing completely beats off the aroma of coffee - the highlight of the coffee tree.

And finally, the most interesting moment is decoration. Fruits and flowers are a symbol of sympathy and prosperity, coins are the wishes of wealth. The coffee aroma and cinnamon aroma go well together. At the top you can fix an anise star.

You can use jewelry to mask some minor defects. At the base of the trunk, glue a few coffee beans - an association with fallen leaves. You can decorate with a bow, butterfly, ladybug. Do-it-yourself topiary photo from coffee, you can find interesting ideas for yourself.

The master class presents a classic version of a round-shaped coffee topiary. But what prevents us from deviating from the rules and making a crown in the form of an ellipse, pyramid or cube for an original gift. In the shape of a heart, the topiary looks especially romantic and expresses feelings without any words.
