There are at least two methods of updating known to me, this is a complete reinstallation of Windows, which means all user settings and files will be lost, but agree with me that it is not convenient to restore everything again.

It will take a lot of time for everything about everything, so this option is no longer available, and we will not even consider it.

And let's start right away with the second option and find out how to upgrade Windows 7 to the maximum version without reinstalling the system. It will not take much time, but all the settings and file data of your computer will not go anywhere, everything will remain, as they say, in its original form, and this is not even an unimportant fact!

I don’t want to describe all those advantages of the Ultimate version over the rest, but why is the mode that is not intended in the Starter version at all, but Home Basic is there but with limitations.

If you are on this page of my blog, then you have an idea about the benefits, you just want to know how to upgrade Windows 7 to the Ultimate version, so without further ado, let's move on to the technical part of the text of the article.

How to update Windows 7

Using the Win key, we enter the Start menu on its right side, right-click on the Computer item in the opened menu, select the Properties item.

The Basic information about your computer window will open at the top of it, you can see the installed version of Windows, which we will need in the future. At this stage, we need to know if there is a Service Pack or not?

You should have the same inscription as shown in my screenshot of Service Pack 1, if it is not there, then it does not matter, just go to the next paragraph of the article.

Installing Windows 7 Service Pack 1

In the search bar of the Start menu, enter the following phrase: "Windows Update".

We launch the found utility.

Approximately such a window should “pop up”, click on the Install updates button.

After the updates are installed, the yellow shield will change to green as shown by me.

If all of a sudden, after the downloaded updates, the color of the shield still has not changed and remains yellow, you need to select the tab Search for updates ⇒ Install updates.

We repeat these steps until there is a green shield. Do not forget to restart your computer after each update installation.

After the successful installation of updates in the basic information of the computer, the inscription Service Pack 1 must appear.

Now we need to check if it is possible to upgrade the computer to the Maximum version? To do this, download on my direct this link to the Yandex disk of the Migration Advisor.

By clicking on the link, you can download the file in a ZIP archive or already unpacked immediately, as well as save it to your I drive if you have one, or share the link with friends.

For speed and convenience, I suggest choosing the option with the unpacked file, but this is not important. The main thing I want to say right away is that you need to be very careful when updating the system, follow the strictly written text of the article precisely because of carelessness and haste, some do not immediately succeed the first time!

Run the downloaded Windows7UpgradeAdvisorSetup.

After the inscription Installation is completed, close the window.

Now launch the shortcut of the Expert Advisor from the Desktop and in the window that appears, click the Start scan button.

When the compatibility check is over, you will see that the update can be performed or otherwise not, which is unlikely.

Windows 7 update process

Finally we got to the most interesting download G key generator, for Windows 7, run it, a window will appear with three versions operating system:

Home Premium;

professional;

Ultimate;

Important!
Update the system should be in ascending order, first set the Professional (Professional), then the Maximum (Ultimate) and nothing else!

To generate a key, click the "Generate" button and the key will be generated immediately.

leave open window with ready, and go to the Start menu ⇒ All Programs ⇒ find the “Windows Anytime Upgrade” utility there ⇒ run it.
Select: Enter the upgrade key.

Next, copy the previously generated key and paste it into the input line.

Then you agree to the terms of the license and click the Update button.

When the update process is completed, the computer will reboot, the OS will be updated according to the version you selected.

To check whether the Activation was successful, you need to enter the settings of the Basic information of the computer, as we already did at the very beginning of the article. At the very bottom of the window, a joyful inscription should await you: Windows activation completed!

But that's not all. It's too early to congratulate you. We are only halfway to our cherished goal, we just have a Professional, and even then only for three days (that's what happened to me), but we need "Maxi" on an ongoing basis.

To do this, we need to repeat some of the steps described above to generate a new key ⇒ run the “Windows Anytime Upgrade” utility, and so on I will not repeat the same thing. Good luck, you will succeed like many who have used this guide!

The article is written for informational purposes and all the actions you perform are performed at your own peril and risk without further claims to the author of the article!

On this I tell you as long as there are questions, please contact me, I will definitely help.
PS. Especially for those who say that the method is allegedly no longer working, I can assume the whole reason is in “crooked hands” because 06/10/2016. I returned my laptop not for the first time to the standard settings.

Using the method described above, the update went off with a bang! I am again the owner of Windows 7 Ultimate, which I recently upgraded to Windows 10 for free, those who did not do this will tell you in vain they did not use the free opportunity, which was valid for exactly a year until 07/29/2016.

For dessert, watch an interesting video about secret hotkeys in Windows.

To ensure that your computer performs at its best and meets the latest security requirements, it is recommended that you install the latest updates on your computer regularly. Sometimes OS developers combine a group of updates into a whole package. But if for Windows XP there were as many as 3 such packages, then for the "seven" only one was released. So let's figure out how to install Service Pack 1 on Windows 7.

You can install the SP1 package either through the built-in "Update Center", and by downloading the installation file from the official Microsoft website. But before you install, you need to find out if your system needs it. After all, it is quite possible that the required package is already installed on the computer.

First of all, consider the option of installing the update by downloading the package from the official Microsoft website.

  1. Launch your browser and follow the link above. Make a click on the button "Download".
  2. A window will open where you will need to select a file to download according to the bitness of your OS. You can find out this information, as mentioned above, in the computer properties window. You need to tick one of the bottom two items in the list. For a 32-bit system, this will be a file called "windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe", and for a 64-bit analog - "windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe". Once you have checked the box, press Next.
  3. After that, you will be redirected to a page where the download of the required update should start within 30 seconds. If for some reason it does not start, click on the inscription "Click here…". The directory where the downloaded file will be placed is specified in the browser settings. The time this procedure will take depends on your internet speed. If you do not have a high-speed connection, then it will take a long time, since the package is quite large.
  4. Once the download is complete, open "Conductor" and go to the directory where the downloaded object was placed. As with any other file, double-click on it with the left mouse button.
  5. The installer window will be displayed, where there will be a warning that all active programs and documents should be closed in order to avoid data loss, since the computer will be restarted during the installation process. Follow this recommendation if necessary and click "Further".
  6. After that, the installer will prepare the computer to start installing the package. Here you just have to wait.
  7. Then a window will open, where once again a warning will be displayed about the need to close all running programs. If you have already done this, then just click "Install".
  8. The update package will be installed. After the automatic restart of the computer, which will occur directly during installation, it will start with the update already installed.

Method 2: "Command line"

You can also install SP1 using "Command line". But for this, you first need to download its installation file, as described in the previous method, and place it in one of the directories on your hard drive. This method is good because it allows you to install with the specified parameters.

  1. click "Start" and follow the inscription "All programs".
  2. Go to the directory called "Standard".
  3. Locate the item in the specified folder "Command line". Click on it PKM and select the launch method with administrator rights from the list that appears.
  4. Will open "Command line". To start the installation, you need to register the full address of the installer file and click on the button Enter. For example, if you placed a file in the root directory of a drive D, then for a 32-bit system you need to enter the following command:

    D:/windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe

For a 64-bit system, the command will look like this:

    D:/windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe

  5. After entering one of these commands, the update package installation window, already familiar to us from the previous method, will open. All further actions must be performed according to the algorithm already described above.

But running through "Command line" What is interesting is that when using additional attributes, you can set various conditions for the execution of the procedure:

  • /quiet- start a "silent" installation. When this option is entered, the installation will be performed without opening any dialog shells, except for a window that reports the failure or success of the procedure after its completion;
  • /nodialog– this parameter prohibits the appearance of a dialog box at the end of the execution of the procedure, which should report on its failure or success;
  • /norestart- this option prevents the PC from automatically restarting after installing the package, even if it is needed. In this case, to complete the installation, you will need to restart the PC manually.

A complete list of possible options that are used when working with the SP1 installer can be seen by adding the attribute to the main command /help.

Method 3: "Update Center"

You can also install SP1 through the standard system tool for installing updates in Windows - "Update centre". If automatic updates are enabled on the PC, then in this case, in the absence of SP1, the system itself will offer to install in the dialog box. Then you just need to follow the elementary instructions displayed on the monitor. If automatic updating is disabled, then you will have to do some additional manipulations.

  1. Click "Start" and go to "Control Panel".
  2. Open section "System and safety".
  3. Next, go to "Update centre…".

You can also open this tool using the window "Run". Click Win+R and enter in the opened line:

  4. On the left side of the interface that opens, click "Search for Updates".
  5. The update search procedure is activated.
  6. After it is completed, click "Install updates".
  7. The installation process will begin, after which you will need to restart your PC.

Attention! To install SP1, you need to have a certain set of already installed updates. Therefore, if they are not available on your computer, then the procedure for searching for and installing updates described above will have to be done several times until all the necessary elements are installed.

From this article it is clear that Service Pack 1 can be installed on Windows 7 both through the built-in "Update centre", and by downloading the package from the official site. Usage "Update Center" more convenient, but in some cases it may not work. That's when you need to download the update from the Microsoft web resource. In addition, it is possible to install using "Command line" with the given parameters.

Updates are software add-ons that troubleshoot, improve security, reliability, and improve the performance of your computer. By default, updates are installed automatically because Microsoft recommends this method of installing updates.

But let's figure it out: is it worth installing updates in automatic mode, or are there other options.

Setting

To do this, open Windows Update. There are several ways to open the Update Center

  1. Press the Win + R key and enter the command
    control /nameMicrosoft.WindowsUpdate
  2. Start - All Programs - Windows Update
  3. Start - Control Panel - Windows Update

In this window, select the item Settings. By default, updates are set to install automatically. In this case, there is no need to search for updates on the Internet. Windows will automatically check for latest updates for the computer and install them. If you want to control the update process yourself, then select the item Do not check for updates

Now, in order to receive updates, you will have to manually start the search for updates. To do this, in the Windows Update window, just click the button Check for updates. After searching, you will have a list of updates available at the moment.

Note: Updates are categorized into Important, Recommended, Optional and Major:

  • Important updates provide significant security, privacy and reliability benefits. They should be installed as soon as they become available, and can be installed automatically using Windows Update.
  • Recommended updates may fix minor problems or improve your computer experience. Although these updates are not intended to correct major deficiencies in the operation of your computer or Windows software, installing them can result in noticeable improvements. They can be installed automatically
  • are updates, drivers, or new software from Microsoft that make your computer easier to use. They can only be set manually.

Selecting important updates to install

To install an update, select the one you need, or uncheck the box if you think that this update is not needed. (In my case I don't use Windows Defender , because I use other security software, so there is no need to install this update). For each update, there is a brief summary, which is presented in the right half of the window.

Selecting Optional Updates

In this case, we select those updates that we consider necessary for our computer, or do not select them. If we do not select anything this time, then the installation of updates is not performed.

Warning: If auto-update is disabled, remember to check regularly for new updates

If you have problems getting new updates, then do the following:

  • If automatic updates are enabled, but you can't install updates, try updating manually.
  • Run anti-virus and anti-spyware programs before starting Windows Update. Make sure your computer is free of viruses and malware.
  • Close all programs and restart your computer. Another program may be interfering with Windows Update.
  • Check your Internet connection. Before running Windows Update, check if you are connecting to other websites.
  • If you know which update you need, such as a service pack or a security update, you can find it on the Microsoft website. Most updates have Knowledge Base (KB) articles that describe the updates and provide instructions for downloading and installing them manually.
  • Check service mode. Start - Administrative Tools - Services. Mode Auto or Manually
