How to properly set up plastic windows. Self-adjustment of plastic windows

During the period of operation of PVC windows and doors, there is a need for their periodic adjustment in connection with preparation for the summer or winter season or repair in case of wear. To do this, you can call a specialist to your home or perform all the adjustment work yourself. The first option is not always convenient, and in the second case, the lack of necessary skills may interfere. Therefore, let's take a detailed look at all the stages of adjusting PVC windows and doors and, based on the knowledge gained, prepare them for the winter period.

The design of plastic windows and doors - the need to adjust them

The design of plastic systems is a complex mechanism that requires scheduled maintenance or periodic repairs. Planned activities are carried out when the seasons change, when it is necessary to adjust the plastic windows before the onset of winter. Most often this concerns proper pressing of the sashes, elimination of friction, and replacement of the rubber seal.

Since we are more interested in how to properly adjust plastic windows and what to pay attention to when doing so, we will consider this case in more detail. Let's start by studying the structure of window systems. The main material for making metal-plastic windows is polyvinyl chloride. Compared to other materials, it has high performance characteristics and is resistant to various physical and chemical influences and temperature changes. Primarily daily and seasonal. A window or door block consists of the following elements:

  • frame - a fixed section to which other elements are attached;
  • sashes - moving parts that open in the horizontal and vertical planes;
  • reinforcing profile, the location of which inside the frame gives the structure a certain rigidity;
  • double-glazed windows (double-chamber ones retain heat better than single-chamber ones);
  • window fittings - special mechanisms that ensure opening and fixing of sashes;
  • impost necessary for closing the sashes;
  • glazing bead - with its help the glass is securely fixed in the frame;
  • ebb - serves to drain water and remove condensate from drainage holes.

The design of plastic doors is somewhat different from the window system. The main differences are as follows:

  • instead of a double-glazed window, an opaque sandwich panel can be installed in the lower part;
  • a mortise lock can be installed as a locking device at the customer’s request;
  • due to the larger size and weight of the door, more powerful hinges are installed;
  • For smooth automatic closing of the door, it is possible to install a closer;
  • low tide is not established.

Otherwise, the design of windows and doors, both with simple and complex opening, has many similarities. For example, the presence of a locking mechanism consisting of locking rollers (eccentrics) located along the perimeter of the opening part of the sash, with the exception of the bottom. Operated by hand. Opposite the eccentrics with a slight offset on the impost and frame of the metal-plastic structure so that they close tightly , metal retaining strips are installed.

The rollers, driven by turning the window (door) handle, begin lateral displacement and engage with the slats, which ends with the sash tightly pressed to the window frame. When preparing plastic Euro-windows for winter conditions, the fittings are adjusted in such a way as to ensure the tightest fit of the sash and prevent the possibility of cold air entering the room.

To open the window, we carry out the reverse movement, which leads to a break in the connection. Before the onset of summer, the fittings are adjusted in such a way as to reduce the level of pressure on the sash and the sealing gasket. Large gaps compensate for the effect of thermal expansion in the summer, therefore, reducing the likelihood of deformation of the window unit.

Elimination of basic technical malfunctions of window systems

One of the reasons that prevents a window from closing tightly is friction. It usually manifests itself during operation by lowering the sash onto the frame, less often when it is shifted laterally. Opening and closing is difficult. In some cases, this leads to a loose fit of the window in its lower part and the formation of a gap through which cold air begins to enter the room. The Eurowindow is drafty. With further lowering, the resistance to the normal movement of the sash increases, which can lead to the formation of serious defects and cause breakdown. You can eliminate the defect yourself in one of two ways.

The first method consists of horizontal adjustment of the upper adjustment screw in the case when there is a lateral displacement of the sash in the horizontal plane, and its middle part touches the frame. Since the screw is located in the area of the top hinge, its adjustment occurs with the sash fully open. Not to be confused with the “ventilation” position, in this case access to the adjustment mechanism is limited. We can adjust the lower horizontal adjustment screw in the “open” and “ventilation” positions. The adjustment range is (-) 2 mm.

To make the adjustment, we perform the following operations:

  • open the door;
  • in the upper end part we find the adjusting screw, it is located at the end;
  • by rotating it using a hexagon, we move the sash in a horizontal plane in the desired direction - to the right or left;
  • in the same way we adjust the adjusting screw on the lower hinge;
  • We check how the opening and closing occurs and whether the “friction” has been eliminated.

The second method is to adjust the height of the sash in case of sagging. Sequence of work for adjusting the lower adjustment screw:

  • remove the protective cap from the bottom hinge;
  • we rotate the vertical screw in the direction we need, clockwise rotation raises the sash, counterclockwise - lowers it;
  • Once the setup is complete, install a protective cap on the loop.

When setting up metal-plastic windows with your own hands, you should turn the screw little by little, literally half a turn at a time, constantly checking the functionality of the system.

Other common breakdowns and how to fix them

The handle turns with great effort. The reason may be contamination or lack of lubricant on the moving parts of the window system. In this case, take machine oil (you can use other oil, the main thing is that it is viscous) and use an oil can to apply it to all moving elements. The opening and closing mechanism located inside the window profile is lubricated through the upper technical holes. Or by unscrewing one of the top screws on the end side of the sash. Flowing down, the oil will evenly cover all moving parts and mechanisms with a protective film.

The handle is loose. Another common problem that arises during long-term use. To make repairs, we take and lift the decorative plate covering the base of the handle. Turn it 90° and gain access to the mounting screws. In this case, it is better to set the handle horizontally. Tighten the screws with moderate force, being careful not to damage the plastic holding the handle. Otherwise you will need to install a new one. Return the plate to its original position.

The handle is broken. In this case, it is advisable to purchase a new handle and install it yourself. To remove the broken handle, turn the protective plate and unscrew the fastening screws. We install the new handle and tighten the screws, return the plate to its place. If the handle turns tightly, lubricate the mechanism with machine oil or special oil for lubricating plastic window fittings.

It is necessary to adjust the pressure using eccentrics and trunnions. For repairs, you will need pliers or a hexagon. The adjustment of the clamping cylindrical pins with a hole for a hexagon (eccentrics) is carried out with a hexagon, pins without holes (trunnions) - with pliers.

When closing the sash, the cylinders engage with the strikers and press it securely. Adjustment is carried out in two directions:

  • Vertical - the clamping force decreases, which is better suited for summer mode.
  • Horizontally – the clamping force increases, which is better suited for winter mode.

When setting up for winter, it is important to make adjustments so that it does not blow. To do this, place a sheet of paper around the perimeter of the sash under the rubber seal. We close the window and try to pull out the paper. If it comes out freely, it means the seal is not tight. We open the sash and, by rotating the eccentric (trunnion) in the desired direction, strengthen the pressure. We close the sash and again check the clamping force using a sheet of paper. We repeat the operation until the sheet is securely held by the seal. Using this method, we check the clamping force along the entire perimeter of the sash.

When adjusting the trunnions with pliers, in order not to scratch the surface of the pressure cylinder, it is necessary to place a soft cloth!

The rubber seal has become unusable. The sash is closed and pressed tightly, but air movement is felt between the window and the frame. If it was not possible to fix the problem by adjusting the eccentrics, then this indicates wear of the rubber seal and a decrease in its elasticity. The correct thing to do is replace it with a new one. This can be done without outside help.

Remove the old seal from the groove. We mark the new seal strictly according to the dimensions of the old one, preferably a little larger. This will allow the ends of the seal to fit tightly to each other at the joints, since installation should be done without tension. We place the rubber strips in a special groove and press it in, achieving a tight fit. Finally, we fasten the ends of the seal at the junction with glue.

To prevent drying and cracking of the rubber seal and to extend its service life, it is recommended to periodically treat its surface with silicone grease.

Instructions for adjusting balcony doors

The adjustment occurs according to the same scheme as in the case of plastic windows. We discussed the main points above. In addition to seasonal adjustments, sometimes there is a need for unscheduled repairs. For example, in cases where:

  • The door leaf is closed, but it “sees through” and does not block the air movement.
  • When opening and closing the door, it touches the door frame, requiring additional effort.
  • The door handle turns very tightly or, on the contrary, becomes loose.

Scheme for adjusting the balcony door in three planes:

  • Vertical, allowing it to be raised or lowered.
  • Frontal, that is, when the clamping force is adjusted along the entire perimeter.
  • Horizontal, allowing you to move the door to the left or right. The adjustment screws are located in the area of the upper and lower hinge.

So, we looked at how to properly, and most importantly, independently carry out repairs or seasonal adjustments of windows. We hope that after reading the proposed materials and instructions, it will not be difficult for you to carry out minor repairs and adjustments on your own. And thereby improve living conditions and extend the service life of window and balcony systems.

No matter how expensive and high-quality the fittings of your plastic windows are, after some time they will inevitably become loose and require adjustment. To eliminate any malfunctions that appear, you can contact a specialized company. However, this option has many disadvantages. Not only will you have to wait for the master to come to your call, but you will also pay quite a lot of money for the most basic work.

In fact, you can adjust PVC windows yourself. You just need to understand which part of the system is loose and perform a few simple steps in accordance with the instructions.

You can understand that the time has come to start adjusting PVC windows by the following signs:

  • when opening a plastic window, the sash catches on the fittings, and various abrasions become noticeable;
  • with the arrival of cold weather, cold air begins to blow from under the window seal;
  • Problems appear with the handles - jamming, loosening, etc.

These and other problems characteristic of PVC windows can be easily eliminated with your own hands if you have basic tools to use.

  1. Hex key.
  2. Pliers.
  3. Crosshead screwdriver.
  4. Adjustment screws.

If the doors start to sag

The most common case is when the window sashes begin to fall and rub against the frame during the process of opening and closing the window. If you leave things to chance, eventually the window will simply break completely, and the only option to fix the problem will be to completely replace it.

It takes an average of 30-40 minutes to eliminate such friction. And you practically won’t need any money for such repairs. In any case, the costs will be an order of magnitude lower than in the case of a complete replacement of the window structure.

First step. Open the window and find the special adjustment screw at the end of the window sash. In most situations, this screw is placed near the top of the window sash.

Second step. Turn the found screw a little using a hexagon. If you need to lift the sash, rotate it clockwise. If it is necessary to lower the mechanism, the screw must be turned against the direction of the arrow.

Third step. Try closing and opening the window. If after your actions the window sash begins to cling less to the structure, tighten the screw in a certain direction until you achieve the desired result.

If there is no change, return the screw to its original position and use the following method.

First step. Carefully remove the protection from the bottom window hinge.

Second step. Start turning the adjusting screw little by little, literally half a turn. Select the direction of rotation as in the previously discussed method.

Third step. Check how the plastic window works after your manipulations.

This simple balancing of the lower canopy or upper mechanism will allow you to return the sash to its place and get rid of friction. You just need to establish exactly in which direction the adjusting screw needs to be tightened to achieve the desired result.

Over time, the elastic band that acts as a seal loses its original volume, which is why cracks of various sizes begin to appear in the frame. Even more often, such cracks appear during seasonal temperature changes.

To check the quality of frame clamping, just take a piece of any paper and press it with the sash. If you can pull out the sheet without much effort, the pressure has deteriorated and the windows need adjustment. If you were unable to pull out the paper or took it out with great effort, everything is fine with the window and there is no need to adjust anything.

To correct the problem in question, it is not at all necessary to change the seal. In most cases, it is enough to simply tighten up certain mechanisms.

Residents of regions with significant temperature differences in winter and summer need to understand the features of such regulation. Timely adjustment will reduce the intensity of the internal stress of the system and extend the service life of the seal, fittings and the entire window as a whole.

First step

Open the plastic window and carefully examine the sash. There are eccentrics on the end part of this element in special slots in the plugs. They look like cylinders. When the position of the handle changes, these eccentrics fit into grooves specially arranged on the frame of the plastic window.

If there are no deviations, the cylinders fit normally into the grooves and the sash is pressed tightly against the window frame. If the balancing is disturbed, the fit of the sash becomes less tight, and drafts appear. To correct the defect, it is enough to adjust the position of the hooks.

Second step

Turn the eccentric 90 degrees. In most cases this can be done manually. Sometimes you have to use pliers or a screwdriver. Eccentrics usually rotate along a small radius, and not directly around their own axis. Typically, such manipulations eliminate the problem in question.

Be careful when checking the correctness of such window adjustment; you should not immediately try to close it in a big way and press the sash tightly against the frame, as this can damage the fittings.

If you cannot turn the eccentrics, tighten the counter hooks located on the window frame. This is done using a hex key. If you find that the eccentrics simply do not reach the counter hooks, place a thin plate of metal or other suitable material, for example, plastic, under the hooks.

The manipulations described above will allow you to normalize the frame pressure in the handle area. However, to achieve maximum effect, it is necessary to adjust the intensity of the pressure on the side where the canopies are placed.

Adjustment from the installation side of the awnings can be performed in different ways. So, if the installed PVC window moves exclusively along its vertical axis, for repairs it will be enough to slightly tighten the already familiar adjusting screw. You will find it on the bottom window hinge. If the structure can be opened for winter ventilation, the adjustment procedure will become somewhat more complicated.

Remove the plug from the lower canopy. You will see 2 hex bolts, as well as one hidden fastener. These elements will allow you to adjust the position of the awnings.

The clamping force is set using a bolt screwed in at an angle of 90 degrees to the window. Turn the screw in the direction of the clock hand and the window sash will press harder. Turning the screw against the direction of the arrow will weaken the pressure. The manipulations in question are best performed with the window closed.

At the top, the sash is fixed differently. A mechanism known among installers as “scissors” is used here. To get to the mentioned mechanism, open the window and carefully examine the surface of the sash end. On it you will find a locking mechanism. It is quite easy to recognize - the mechanism is attached to the gasket and springs noticeably.

Press the lock and turn the window handle as if you were opening the window for ventilation. After such manipulations, the window sash will remain hanging only on the lower canopy and those very “scissors” located on top. Now you have access to the head, with which you can adjust the clamping force of the window frame. First determine in which direction you need to adjust the mechanism, and then make the final adjustment.

The handles also need periodic attention and adjustment. If the handles of your windows are loose, the entire repair will consist of simply strengthening their fastenings. You just need to arm yourself with a screwdriver and tighten the screws.

First step

Pull the decorative trim installed at the bottom of the handle towards you, and then turn the handle perpendicular to its original position.

Second step

Tighten the bolts (most often there are 2) with an ordinary screwdriver.

Third step

Check the handle and, if necessary, tighten it more or loosen the fastenings.

If you are unable to remove the cover manually, use additional accessories, such as a knife. But be careful - such products are made of soft plastic and are easily damaged by sharp tools.

Lubricating handle fittings

Quite often the handle begins to jam or does not reach the required position. Various reasons lead to this problem. First, try simply lubricating the fittings.

First step

Pull out the handle. Clean the mounting hole thoroughly. You can even vacuum it.

Second step

Lubricate moving parts. Any liquid lubricant will do; sewing machine oil is usually used.

Third step

Treat corroded surfaces with a special WD-40 spray. If there is no corrosion, you can skip this step.

Fourth step

Return the handle to its place.

If your window handle is stuck and you cannot return it to its normal position, do not try to solve the problem by force. This way you risk simply breaking the mechanism. In most cases, the cause of this problem is the erroneous operation of the locking mechanism.

To solve the problem, just pull back the lock lever. Find it at the end of the window sash. The lock is located near the handle and can be released manually without any extra effort.

Recommendations for further care of plastic windows

In order to avoid future problems with disruption of the normal adjustment of windows and related fittings, it is strongly recommended to carry out basic service operations in a timely manner. Conduct an audit at least once a year. Preventive maintenance comes down to simply lubricating the main components of the system and moisturizing the seals.

It is also important to follow the following operating rules for PVC windows:

Thus, minor repairs to plastic windows can be done with your own hands. But you can begin performing any operations only after fully studying the basic principles of operation and recommendations for using the window. Otherwise, you risk only making the situation worse. Follow the recommendations received, be careful, and everything will work out.

Good luck!

Hide

Modern plastic windows are made using simple and reliable metal fittings, which for many years perform their functions without problems even in the factory state. However, for greater comfort, sometimes it is necessary to adjust the plastic windows yourself - for example, to better retain heat in the room in winter.

Another possible need is repair of the moving parts of the window during active use. The handle becomes loose, jams and requires replacement, the doors stop opening smoothly and effortlessly; in addition, from time to time they shift and begin to touch the frame. How to repair or adjust a plastic window without calling a specialist?

Necessary tool

It is not at all necessary to spend money on turning to professionals to fix it - repair and adjustment of these structures do not even require special tools. Here's what you need to prepare:

  • hexagon with a diameter of 4 mm - also used for adjusting bicycles;
  • screwdriver with attachments - T, TX (star, for some window models), Phillips;
  • pliers;
  • WD-40 or machine oil.

Main adjustment points

Adjustment is made at four main points:

  1. Bottom hinge - for adjusting the position of the sash vertically and horizontally.
  2. “Scissors” at the top hinge - to adjust the tilt angle of the sash.
  3. Eccentrics along the entire perimeter of the sash - to adjust the pressing force against the frame.
  4. Pen.

Adjusting the pressure of the sash to the frame

Working with windows has a number of tasks, but most often it requires adjustment for the winter, which consists of adjusting the force of pressing the window sash to the frame. This adjustment is made by changing the position of the trunnions, or eccentrics, which come in two types depending on the window model:

  • oval - adjusted by hand or pliers;
  • round - adjustable using a hexagon.

These parts are built into grooves into which, when the handle is turned, the strikers enter, cling to the eccentrics and press the sash against the frame. Depending on the type of fittings, do-it-yourself euro-window repair And involves adjusting either the trunnions or the counter hooks.

The eccentrics have three positions:

  • exactly in the center of the groove - standard clamp;
  • to the right of center - weak pressure;
  • to the left of center - strong pressure.

You need to use all three positions, since the double-glazed windows need to be adjusted several times a year - in winter, press harder, in summer - less.

If you leave the trunnions in one position for a long time, this will lead to deformation of the seal, and in the future the adjustment will no longer protect against blowing.

If there is air blowing from the hinge side, the awnings should be adjusted. This is done like this:

  • a plastic cap is removed from the bottom hinge, under which there are several bolts - tightening it perpendicular to the frame will increase the pressing force of the sash;
  • The scissors are adjusted from above - for this, the same pin is used as on the sash.

Adjusting the sash position

Sometimes installation includes adjusting the position of the sash in the horizontal and vertical planes. The structure deviates from its standard position due to damage to the moving parts due to the window being open for a long time or due to careless handling of the mechanisms.

Setting the tilt angle of the sash during ventilation

The plastic window handle has 4 positions, two of which are tilting the upper part of the sash. Turning the handle all the way up is the maximum recline; positioning it between the horizontal and vertical positions is a micro-ventilation mode, useful in severe frosts.

In some cases it is absent - the window reclines exactly the same distance as with full ventilation. Adjusting windows for winter involves changing this distance. To adjust the degree of pressure on the upper part of the sash, a pin on scissors is used.

This is done this way:

  • The window opens in ventilation mode.
  • If there is no access to the scissors in this position, you should open the window in two modes at once - fully open and ventilate. Sometimes a blocker prevents you from doing this - you can disable it by pressing the metal tab on the handle mechanism.
  • When the scissors open, an eccentric will be visible on them - the same as for adjusting the sash pressure. Tightening it with a hexagon will reduce the tilt angle, loosening it will increase it.

When the adjustment of the plastic window fittings with your own hands is completed, the sash returns to its original position.

Correcting the vertical position

The displacement of the sash in the vertical plane affects the convenience of opening and closing the window - the sash begins to touch the frame, and you have to forcefully lift it or press it down.

The vertical position of the sash is adjusted using a bolt on the bottom hinge. This is done like this:

  • The plastic cap is removed from the canopy.
  • On top of the metal part of the hinge there is a hex bolt that runs parallel to the frame. Loosening it moves the sash down, tensioning it lifts the structure.
  • If the window or balcony door is large and wide (from 100 cm), metal closers are used to facilitate closing. Along with adjusting the bolt in the lower hinge, this structural part must also be adjusted.

Shift of the sash in the horizontal plane

How to adjust in horizontal axis? For this, both canopies are used - a loop at the bottom and scissors at the top.

  • To adjust from below, you need to remove the plastic protection from the hinge and tighten the side bolt running parallel to the frame. It can be accessed both from the side of the slope and from the inside, from the side of the sash. Tensioning the bolt will move the sash to the right, loosening it will move it to the left.
  • To adjust the position of the sash from above, you do not need to fully straighten the scissors. You should open the window and find a recessed hex bolt on the inner end of the sash - it is located near the upper edge of the structure. Its weakening and tension in the same way affects the position of the sash.

Remember that such adjustment is carried out only in the open position of the sash, otherwise the mechanisms can be damaged.

Handle repair and adjustment

Active use of the window, constant impact on its main mechanism - the handle - leads to various types of breakdowns. In such cases, calling a specialist is not required, since adjusting the handle on a plastic window is very simple.

Loosening

If the handle becomes loose, just tighten the two bolts hidden under the plastic decorative trim. To dismantle it, no tool is required - just pull the handle towards you and turn the part 90 degrees. The bolts are tightened with a Phillips screwdriver, then the fittings are returned to place.

Jamming

If the handle turns with force or does not move into standard positions, the cause is usually clogging of the mechanisms. In this case, you should unscrew the handle and clean all moving parts of the structure with WD-40 aerosol. After this, the window is lubricated with machine oil.

Adjusting the plastic window handle

In addition, the reason for poor window functioning is sometimes:

  • incorrect position of the plastic window sashes - do-it-yourself repair and adjustment in this case consists of changing their position using a hex key, as described above;
  • if the handle does not fit well into the “closed” position, this indicates that the sash is being pressed too hard against the frame - it is necessary to adjust the trunnions around the entire perimeter, loosening them a little.

Jamming

The handle getting stuck in one position is a consequence of the locking mechanism. It is necessary so as not to break the fittings - the metal locking tongue prevents, for example, opening a window when it is in ventilation mode. However, the blocker sometimes works at the wrong moment, preventing you from closing the window. This happens due to improper handling - too sudden a change in the position of the handle.

Adjusting the handle of the plastic window in this case depends on the manufacturer of the fittings:

  • The lock is disabled as follows: the sash opens, there is a metal plate near the handle, which you need to press on and turn the handle in any direction.
  • Maco et al. There is a steel tongue underneath the handle that sticks out at an angle when in lock mode. You need to press it, placing it in the “parallel to the frame” position, and change the position of the handle.

Replacement

If the standard handle is damaged or it needs to be replaced with a locking mechanism, you can install a new part yourself. This is done very simply:

  • The plastic protection is removed from the old handle.
  • Two cross bolts are unscrewed.
  • A new handle is installed and screwed on.

Such installation and repair of plastic window fittings does not take much time, and a new part can be found in any hardware store.

Thus, everyone can cope with the work, since you can adjust plastic windows with your own hands quickly and without the use of complex tools.

A plastic window, even the highest quality and correctly installed, requires periodic maintenance. It can last for several years without any problems, but over time it may feel friction when opening or closing. The second problem is that there is air blowing from under the seal, and the third is that the handle turns with force. All these breakdowns are not complicated and can be easily fixed, and it is not at all necessary to call a specialist: adjusting plastic windows yourself is a matter of minutes. All you need to do is tighten or loosen a few screws. The main thing is to know where and how. More on this in photo and video format.

Winter and summer mode

Most often, plastic windows need to be adjusted for the new season: in winter, complete tightness is desirable, and in summer, you can let in a little fresh air. This is achieved by adjusting the sash pressure density. It's easy to do it yourself. Once you figure it out, you’ll be surprised how simple everything is...

The window sash is pressed to the frame using pins. These are movable metal protrusions on the side surface of the sash. When the handle is turned, they move behind the mating metal plates mounted on the frame. In order to be able to adjust the tightness of the fit of the sash and frame, they have an eccentric - either they themselves are made of an oval shape, or in the center of the round protrusion there is an adjustment with an offset center. By changing the position of the trunnions (see photo), you change the degree of pressure, that is, eliminate the draft from under the sash.

As you can see, the shapes of the locking protrusions can be different. Various tools can be used to adjust them. If your window has eccentrics like those in the picture on the left - oval-shaped protrusions - change their position using pliers: clamp it and turn it in the desired direction.

If the locking tab is round, as in the picture on the left, it can be slotted for a screwdriver or hex key. After examining them, you will easily understand which tool you need: a regular screwdriver or a No. 4 hexagon. Insert a key or screwdriver into the slot and also turn it to the desired position.

Place all the protrusions in the same position. Please note that they are not only on one side of the sash - the outer one, but also on the inner side (at least one, but there is one), and can also be at the top and bottom. Set all the existing locking lugs in the same position, otherwise the frame will warp and there will be blowing from under it.

When adjusting the fittings of plastic windows, remember that weak pressure corresponds to the summer mode of closing plastic windows, standard or strong pressure corresponds to the winter mode. If you carry out maintenance work in winter, first set it to the standard position and check if there is airflow. It is not recommended to immediately pinch the rubber bands on new PVC windows. In this position, the rubber seal installed around the perimeter is strongly pressed. Because of this, over time it loses elasticity. A normal seal has a 15-year warranty, but still... If the pressure is immediately set to maximum, the rubber will deteriorate faster. As a result, once again setting the winter position on the plastic windows, you will find that it is still blowing from under the sash, and the rubber is all cracked. This means it's time to change the seal. This is also not very difficult, but it takes more time, and you still need to buy tires.

So: the winter and summer positions of plastic windows are set by changing the position of the locking lugs - trunnions. Everything is explained in detail in the video below. After viewing, adjusting plastic windows yourself will finally cease to be a problem.

How to adjust a window so it doesn't blow

Sometimes, plastic windows, even after moving the trunnions to the position of strong pressure, are not airtight - there is a blow from under the sash and replacing the rubber does not help. This usually happens when the house shrinks. In this case, they say that the window sags. When this happens, contact between the locking lug and the strike plate is lost. When you turn the handle, the protrusion-trunnion should go behind the plate, pressing the sash. If this does not happen and drafts occur, the heat is blown out of the room.

Where are the trunnions (pressing lugs) usually located?

When a plastic window sag, the adjustment is different: you need to move the sash so that those protrusions that do not reach the plates catch on them.

First you need to decide which of the trunnions do not reach the locking plates. This is done mechanically. First, inspect the sash, remember where the protrusions are. Close the window. Grasp the sash frame where the trunnions are installed and pull it towards you.

If there is contact, the frame remains motionless, if not, it moves. So you check in which places there is no contact and determine in which direction the sash needs to be moved. This is done by adjusting the lower and upper loops.

Bottom Hinge Adjustment

If the PVC window somewhere below does not close, we will move the sash using the lower hinge. There are two adjustments: one in the horizontal plane - moves closer to the hinge or further from it, and the second - in the vertical - raises or lowers the sash a couple of millimeters.

To move the lower part of the sash closer or further to the hinge, it is opened. At the bottom of the sang there is an adjustment hole for a hex key (sometimes for an asterisk).

A hexagon is inserted into it, turning it clockwise brings the lower corner closer to the loop, and turning it counterclockwise moves it away. Move the sash a little and try to close/open it. Once the result is achieved, stop. If the resource is turned all the way, but there is no result, return everything to its original position: this is the wrong adjustment.

This screw can be used to correct the situation if, when closing the window, the sash touches the frame at the bottom. By bringing it a little closer to the loop, you will eliminate this problem.

There is a second adjustment screw on the bottom hinge. To get to it, you need to place the sash for ventilation and remove the decorative trim. It can be easily removed, you just need to pull the bottom edge towards you a little (1-2 mm) and pull it up. After removing the protective cap, you will see a recess in the upper part. A 4 mm hexagon is inserted into it. Turning it clockwise raises the sash slightly, turning it counterclockwise lowers it.

We talk in detail about how to remove the decorative cover on the hinge, how and how to adjust the bottom hinge on a PVC window in the following video.

Adjusting the top hinge

If the top corner of a plastic window does not close, you need to move it. To do this, open the window at least 90°. You can do less, but it will be inconvenient to work. There is a hinge at the top of the sash. It differs in design from the bottom one, but it also has a hole for a hexagon.

The adjustment screw is on the side. By rotating it, we move the sash further from the hinge (if the trunnions farthest from the hinge do not close) or closer to the hinge. One thing - there must be a gap of several millimeters between the sash and the hinge: it is necessary for the tilt and turn mechanism to fit there. Therefore, turn the key half a turn and check how the window opens/closes.

Sometimes this adjustment does not help. Then it is required press the top corner against the frame. There is another screw for this - on the tilt and turn mechanism. To have access to this screw, you will have to open the window in two positions at once. To do this, open the sash and press the lock. It usually comes in two designs - in the form of a locking loop or a tongue (see photo below).

The blocker is retracted all the way, holding it, the handle is turned for ventilation, the upper edge of the sash is pulled slightly towards you, and the rotating mechanism is opened. A device that holds the sash open. On one of the plates there is a protrusion for the same hex key. By turning it, you can adjust the tightness of the upper corner of the sash. It is necessary if the upper corner of the plastic window does not close.

You can watch the video again to see how to adjust plastic windows yourself. Explanations to the point, accessible and without unnecessary words.

The plastic window does not close

Sometimes the geometry of the window opening changes so much that even moving the sash to the maximum, we do not get the desired result: the plastic window does not close. What to do in this case? If there is an adjustment on the mating part, as in options a and b in the photo, try to get by with a little damage - tighten it further here. The principle is the same: insert the hex key and rotate it clockwise, pushing it to the maximum.

If a few millimeters are missing not in depth, but sideways, then will have to be installed under the mating part of the lining. They are cut from a piece of white plastic. The maximum thickness is 3-4 mm. First, unscrew the screws and remove the stops. Two gaskets are cut out: one is installed from below, the second from the side. As a result, the stop moves 3 mm deeper into the sash.

They are first installed on the desired place of the lining, on them there is a stop, which is screwed with a self-tapping screw. Protruding pieces of plastic are cut off with a sharp knife. Check whether the window closes or not.

If this does not help, there is another way: move the sash frame. It is quite flexible and can be moved about 5mm. The procedure is as follows:

If you look closely, you can see that the frame is slightly curved. The main thing is that the window now closes. In 99% of cases this is enough. If you are unlucky and all these tricks do not produce results, you need to remove the slopes and also bend the frame.

You can watch all the steps described above in the video.

Adjusting and replacing handles

A fairly common problem: the handle is difficult to turn. If the problem is not eliminated in time, due to excessive efforts, it breaks, leaving a short stump with which you definitely can’t do anything.

First, how to make the handle close again easily. The locking mechanisms must first be cleaned and lubricated. First, accumulated dust and dirt are removed, wiped dry, then all moving parts are lubricated. You need to use pure oils, without alkalis and acids. The best option is machine oil, you can use any analogue or modern product from a spray can.

Having lubricated all the rubbing and moving parts, open/close the sash several times and turn it on its hinges. Everything should move smoothly, without jerking.

If there are still problems, most likely during the process of adjustments or changes in the geometry of the window, the blocker has shifted. It should fit easily into the mating part and press tightly against the frame. Then the handle turns easily. Move the sash and try again.

Now about how to change the handle. The fastener on which it is held is hidden under a decorative overlay. If you look closely, you will see that there is a thin lid. You grab it with your fingers or pry it with your nails, pull it slightly toward you and turn it to one side. Two bolts open. They are unscrewed, the handle is removed, and a new one is put in its place.

We looked at the most common problems and how to fix them. Now not only is adjusting plastic windows not a problem for you, you can also do minor repairs yourself. You can also carry out maintenance yourself (lubrication once a year).

Plastic windows have long ceased to be an indicator of luxury. Today, modern windows are considered a kind of indicator of the level of comfort at which your home remains protected not only from the cold, but also from noise. But for this you need to follow several rules in maintenance and care.

And if for high-quality and correct installation of a double-glazed window it is necessary to seek help from specialists, then all other periodic maintenance work can be carried out independently. And for this it is not necessary to have special knowledge and skills. It is enough just to understand the design features and be able to handle the tools.

Peculiarities

The design feature of plastic windows is the ability to adjust the mechanism during maintenance. And this procedure may be required for any window, regardless of the service life and quality of the fittings. It is important to periodically check the serviceability of the opening and closing mechanisms. And also, when the season changes, inspect the condition of the fittings - the durability and functionality of the windows depends on this, which will most likely save you from large-scale repairs in the future.

And being able to do all the work yourself is a useful skill. In fact, it is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance.

Plastic windows have many advantages:

  • optimal level of sound insulation - modern double-glazed windows protect the living space from extraneous sounds from the street;
  • retains heat - the plastic frame retains up to 20% of the heat in the room;
  • excellent tightness - which allows you to protect the room from drafts, and there is no need to additionally insulate the frames before the onset of cold weather;
  • plastic does not deform under constant humidity and temperature changes;

  • fire safety - the plastic from which modern windows are made does not support combustion;
  • attractive appearance and many modifications - the customer has the opportunity to choose any size, color and style of the window frame;
  • ease of cleaning - to maintain cleanliness it is necessary to periodically wipe the surface of the frame with a damp cloth;
  • retains its original appearance for a long time - the surface does not fade in the sun, does not change color and does not require periodic painting;
  • multifunctionality - a modern plastic window also protects from insects and bright sunlight.

However, it is worth noting some disadvantages of plastic windows:

  • non-compliance with installation technology can shorten the service life of the window;
  • unlike natural wood, plastic is not able to maintain optimal levels of humidity and temperature in the room;
  • moving structural elements require proper maintenance;
  • over a long period of operation, replacement of fittings and insulation is required.

During operation, you may encounter many problems. The window can cling to fittings, let air through and cause drafts in the room. And most often, to fix the problem you only need to tighten the mounting screws and treat the fittings with oil. And in order to determine the cause of the malfunction, it is necessary to roughly understand the design features.

A plastic window consists of standard parts.

  • Plastic frame– inside which the reinforcing fortification is hidden. The entire structure must withstand enormous loads, so during the production process the frame undergoes quality tests. Self-tapping screws are used to securely fix the steel profile.
  • Doors– the sealed design of the doors also has a steel profile. All moving elements are made of reliable materials, which guarantees normal closing and opening of the window.

  • Double-glazed windows– depending on the requirements, manufacturers offer windows with one, two, three or more double-glazed windows: between the two glasses an air chamber is formed with a special gaseous substance, which is necessary to create excellent thermal characteristics.
  • Accessories- these are all the devices and parts located in the sash and frame, which are necessary for fixing the double-glazed windows, handles and controlling the sash.
  • Sealant– necessary for hermetically closing the window. Insulation and sealing elements protect the room from moisture and cold air from the street. Over time, the quality of the seal may deteriorate due to natural wear and mechanical deformation.

  • Glazing beads- these are plastic parts that are necessary to hold the glass in the frame.
  • Impost– necessary to strengthen the structure if the window frame has more than one structural element. This element is fixed in the window opening and divides it into several parts. But recently, manufacturers have improved window frames and can offer customers large windows without additional fixing profiles.

Modern plastic windows differ in quality, number of double-glazed windows, strength, various modes and price. And each category requires proper care.

Modes

Modern manufacturers offer PVC windows with two modes of opening the sash: swinging and ventilation. The opening angle of the flap can also be adjusted by built-in limiters. A common problem with windows with several modes is the simultaneous opening of the sash and the opening of the micro-ventilation mode.

It can occur when the open sash is switched to ventilation mode by turning the handle up. In this case, the sash is fixed only on one lower hinge, and the upper part sags and falls under its own weight.

This problem must be solved as soon as possible, otherwise the lower hinge may not withstand the load and break. To do this, you need to press on the top of the sash and try to press the window tightly against the frame. In this case, the handle must be turned up to the ventilation mode. Then, after the sash is completely closed in the frame, the handle is lowered to the swing mode. If necessary, you can independently adjust the lock on the sash. After this, the window closes.

But manufacturers of plastic windows also offer sliding structures. Such doors are best suited for installation on a balcony. The main advantage of sliding windows is that they save space; the windows are opened not by turning, but by moving them parallel to the frame. In this case, the window sill area can be used more efficiently.

Such windows do not require special care and will last for 10 years just like their classic counterparts. They retain heat in the room and prevent street noise from entering the apartment. Another advantage of these designs is the ability to move the mosquito net, like the frames themselves: the net can move parallel to the frame to the right and left.

And you can also additionally install special valves on the window for air flow or protection for children. In this case, you can be sure that the child will not be able to accidentally open the window.

Required Tools

Adjusting a plastic window at home is not a difficult task. In this case, it is important to have basic skills in using tools. Before work, you should prepare the necessary kit. The choice of tools largely depends on the internal mechanism of the window.

To adjust a plastic window you will need:

  • pliers or pliers;
  • hex wrench No. 4;
  • flat and figured Phillips screwdrivers;
  • a set of star keys;
  • scissors for seal;
  • putty knife;
  • machine oil, silicone grease or WD-40 spray.

In some cases it is necessary to use different tools. For example, it is better to use pliers to turn oval-shaped eccentrics, and a hex wrench or screwdriver to turn adjusting screws with an internal slot. While only a Phillips screwdriver is used to replace the handle.

A spatula will only be needed if the straightening plate is faulty. But if the warranty is still valid, you should contact the manufacturer to have the problem resolved.

Although you can install the straightening plates yourself. The main thing is that the glass unit does not rest against the plate, otherwise the glass may not withstand the pressure and crack.

How to adjust it yourself?

Many people simply do not know or forget that plastic windows require periodic maintenance. Adjustment and adjustment of double-glazed windows may be necessary if a poor-quality installation was carried out. Just like natural wear and tear can make itself felt within several years even after a quality installation. And even an experienced master may have questions when adjusting the window.

You can read detailed instructions on how to fix the main problems you can fix yourself.

  • Friction is felt when opening or closing a window, or the sash touches the frame - in this case, the reason may be loose hinges. This problem can arise when the building shrinks or the fittings become loose. To eliminate the problem, it is necessary to adjust the upper and lower hinges horizontally. For this job you will need a hex wrench. Insert the key into the top window hinge and turn clockwise to adjust the height distance from the sash to the window frame. At the same time, the lower part of the opposite element will noticeably lower. To adjust the lower hinge, you will also need a hexagon, but the same work must be done from the outside. The shifts average 2 mm.

  • Draft and blowing windows– cold air enters the apartment through the frame insulation. During operation, the window may lose its seal due to wear of the rubber seal. Manufacturers provide a guarantee of about 15 years for high-quality seals. If you neglect to monitor the technical condition, the seal may wear out. To replace it, carefully remove the defective seal from the grooves and attach a new one.

  • The handle turns hard– the problem may be a malfunction of the mechanism or lack of lubrication. In this case, first you should treat the mechanism with machine oil. To do this, turn the handle at a right angle, unscrew the screws and remove the plastic decorative trim. Under the rectangular plate there are bolts that are tightened with a screwdriver. If the mechanism periodically jams or the handle is difficult to turn, lubricate all elements of the turning mechanism. If there are visible defects, or if after treating the fittings with lubricant the problem has not been eliminated, replace the handle with a new one and check the technical condition once a year.

  • If the handle is stuck in ventilation mode– most often the reason lies in the jamming of the mechanism called “scissors” in the upper corner. The problem can be dealt with only after removing the sash from its hinges. To do this, carefully remove the decorative plugs and unscrew the screws. After this, inspect the ventilation fixing mechanism, find and try to adjust the elements that have flown off. Replace all the elements and check the functionality of the “scissors”. They should be adjacent to the top loop. After this, install the sash in place in the window opening.
  • Tilt&Turn Problems are eliminated quite simply. If the window is opened in two modes at once, you need to quickly return the sash to its place with a slight pressure and lower the handle down to close the mode.

  • Most problems can usually be resolved by adjusting the top and bottom hinges of the window.. To check the pressure of the sash to the frame, you can hold a lit candle to the window: if the fire goes out, it means that the sash needs to be adjusted. In this case, it is necessary to check the trunnions - these are small round-shaped parts that are located on the sash and regulate the pressure. To make the contact between the sash and frame more dense, it is necessary to turn the mechanisms clockwise, and to loosen the pressure, turn them counterclockwise. This adjustment should be carried out twice a year when the season changes. In winter, the window must be tightly closed so that cold street air does not enter the apartment. In the summer heat, on the contrary, the pressure should be minimal so that fresh air can enter the room even with the window closed.

During the first year of window operation, adjustments should be minimal. It is important to remember that with loose pressure the window will last longer than with maximum tightness.

What to do if it doesn't close?

Quite often a problem arises when the sash stops closing. And this is not surprising, especially if the window was installed 5-6 years ago. In such cases, minor repairs are required. And fortunately, you can do this job yourself. But first you need to understand the cause of the malfunction.

A window may stop closing for several reasons:

  • manufacturing design defect;
  • poor quality fittings;
  • neglect of installation rules during installation;
  • sash misalignment;

  • The seal needs to be replaced;
  • malfunction of the opening and closing mechanism;
  • debris, dirt or dust.

If you cannot close the sash tightly, you should first make sure that there are no elements obstructing this. Another problem may be sash misalignment. In this case, the window will cling to the corner of the frame, and as a result of the distortion, a gap will appear. If one of the corners of the sash is sagging, it is necessary to adjust the bolts on the hinges. To do this, you need to adjust the angle of the sash vertically and horizontally.

And if you cannot turn the handle, then perhaps the problem lies in the blocker located on the side at the bottom of the sash. Adjust the position of the lock yourself and try turning the handle. After these manipulations, the problem should be resolved.

Replacement of accessories

There are a large number of different elements located on the end part of the sash. The fittings play almost the main role in the quality of the window and are responsible for trouble-free operation throughout the entire service life. And the service life of the window depends on the quality of the fittings.

Window fittings are divided into three types.

  • Budget– often used by developers in new buildings. Such accessories are offered by domestic manufacturers, and they are usually limited in functionality. For example, windows with budget fittings do not switch to different seasonal modes and do not have the function of opening for micro-ventilation.

  • Standard– produced by both domestic and foreign companies.
  • Specialized– used by various manufacturers for windows installed in crowded places: airports, shopping centers, administrative buildings.

All types of fittings differ from each other in quality, design complexity and reliability. When working with replacing and adjusting fittings, you must be careful. Any small breakdown can cost the owner of the apartment dearly in the future.

The following tips and recommendations will help you fix plastic window problems without the help of specialists. But the main thing is to carry out all work without pressure and effort, otherwise there is a possibility of larger breakdowns. Find out what else you need to know to adjust a plastic window yourself.

  • In some cases, it may be necessary to adjust the window frame vertically. To do this, you need to remove the decorative plastic cap from the bottom hinge and use a hexagon to adjust the position of the frame. Circular movements clockwise will raise the sash, and counterclockwise will lower it.

  • Once every 5 years, it is necessary to clean the fittings in hard-to-reach places from accumulated dust and dirt. This process cannot be called labor-intensive, but it will be much easier to do this work together. To do this, you will need to remove the sash from both hinges and remove the overhead elements. All parts must be cleaned and the moving elements lubricated with oil. After complete drying, the fittings are installed in their places, and the structure is assembled in the same sequence.
  • It is not recommended to wash windows using abrasive cleaners and solutions. To clean the surface, it is best to use a soft cloth and a special product for plastic windows.

  • Monitor the quality of the rubber seal - it needs to be replaced periodically. It should not have cracks or cuts. To make the seal last longer, periodically inspect the window and lubricate the rubber with silicone grease. Without proper care, the seal will become unusable after 5-6 years of operation.
  • If the window is used for a long time, the seal may need to be replaced. This need is not always associated with poor quality rubber or inadequate care; there is also such a thing as physical wear and tear. Perhaps even an ordinary person can cope with replacing the seal. You need to purchase a new rubber seal from a hardware store and carefully remove the old one from the surface of the sash. It is better to start all work from the lower or upper corner. After this, the surface and any open grooves are thoroughly cleaned. Check in advance that the amount of new rubber is exactly enough for the entire window; the seal cannot be stretched.
